Perform a variety of laboratory tests and related analyses to assist in crime detection; collect, analyze and compare evidence for forensic application. Identify physiological fluids including blood and semen and determine appropriate species; type fluids in hematological groups. Make microscopic comparisons of variations in ballistics and tool marks. Identify and make comparisons of paint, glass, minerals, fibers and other items. Perform analysis of drugs, poisons, fillers and related materials. Perform handwriting analysis to determine whether authentic or forged; detect erasures, additions and alterations in handwriting; make comparisons of paper and writing.
Basic principles and practices of criminal investigations, identification and analysis. Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations pertaining to evidence, and arrest and prosecution of criminals. Safe Work practices and occupational hazards of the job. Methods and practices of handwriting comparison. Uses, maintenance and care of a variety of laboratory analyses and physical comparisons to assist in crime detection. Successfully interact and communicate with police officers and other police personnel. Communicate clearly and concisely. Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to hazardous chemicals, drugs and poisons.
Knowledge of: Mississippi Criminal law including Mississippi Penal Code, Mississippi Code of Criminal Procedure and Mississippi Family Code, Courtroom procedures, Police investigative resources, procedures and methods, organization and functions of other Police Department divisions. Ability to: prepare detailed technical reports regarding findings and conclusions, respond to requests and inquiries from investigators, other police department personnel and the general public, testify in court as an expert witness. Two years of experience comparable to that of a Criminalist I in the City of Jackson. Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with major course work in Chemistry, Biology or related field.
