STARTING PAY: $13.45 per hour

SUMMARY

Under supervision and in accordance with procedures, this position is responsible for managing the custody of all Police Department evidence and property. Duties include, but are not limited to storing and releasing evidence, issuing permits to regulated industries, managing office supplies and forms and testifying in court.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives, stores, maintains and releases confiscated and personal property.
  • Transfers evidence to DPS laboratories.
  • Safeguards and maintains integrity of all evidence and chain of custody in accordance with state laws, city ordinances and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Receives, verifies, catalogs, stores, retrieves, transfers, and disposes of all property and evidence.
  • Assists officers with booking evidence as needed.
  • Receives, verifies, releases money and/or completes deposits into the City General Fund Account.
  • Reviews local and federal criminal history background checks to determine appropriate release of firearms.
  • Assists customers both in the Property Warehouse and over the telephone.
  • Works with a variety of hazardous items including weapons, narcotics, drug paraphernalia, poisons, bodily fluids, flammable and explosive materials, currency and unsanitary materials.
  • Utilizes computerized barcoding system to track evidence inventory.
  • Transfers property to purchasing agent for city auction.
  • Maintains records on evidence storage and chain of custody actions.
  • Provides general information to the public and law enforcement personnel pertaining to policy and procedures.
  • Receives, stores and disposes of bicycles, miscellaneous auto parts, televisions, speakers and other bulky items.
  • Accompanies officers, detectives and anyone who needs to do business in the warehouse who is not Property Personnel to the warehouse.
  • Trains new hires in the Property Department.
  • Applies sound judgment, discretion, and initiative in performing daily duties with minimal direct supervision.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Valid Driver's License required.

Prior to being accepted for this position, the applicant must successfully complete a drug screen and polygraph exam.

A Police Department employee must have an excellent reputation in order to maintain the public's trust in the Police Department. The following factors would automatically disqualify an applicant: Any felony conviction; Class A or B misdemeanor conviction within the last 5 years; discharge from military service with other than Under Honorable Conditions; any illegal possession or use of controlled substances, other than marijuana after 18 years of age, prior to 18 years, the Chief of Police will review on individual basis; use of marijuana over an extended period of time within the last three years, or any use of marijuana within 1 year prior to submission of the application for this position; three traffic accidents in the past 3 years in which you were at fault; eight traffic citations for moving violations within the past three years, or three traffic citation for moving violations within the last year; driver license presently suspended; history of bad debt.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work with confidential materials.
  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines as assigned.
