DEFINITION

Takes custody of inmate personal property and clothing held for safekeeping at a Sheriff's Department Custody facility.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:

Positions allocable to this class are assigned to a Sheriff's Department Custody facility and typically report to a Supervising Evidence and Property Custodian, Sheriff. These positions are responsible for ensuring that personal property and clothing held by the Sheriff's Department are protected from loss or damage and that the disposition of all property and clothing are maintained appropriately.

Evidence and Property Custodian I, Sheriff positions require the knowledge and application of Departmental policies and guidelines and applicable laws and statutes governing the storage and safekeeping of personal property. These positions also require the exercise of basic computer data entry skills and a working knowledge of automated accountability and property tracking systems.

Essential Job Functions

Receives, issues receipts for, and inventories personal property and clothing items held at a custody facility and may, on occasion, transport these items to a Sheriff's Department facility.

Lists, files, and records the location of personal property and clothing held at a custody facility.

Maintains personal property records, including found property reports, property control cards, and property release forms.

Releases personal property and clothing to an inmate client, relative, authorized representative, or federal or state prison, after appropriate verification of inmate release or transfer.

Arranges for the transfer or disposal of unclaimed items.

Responds to inquiries regarding the disposition of inmate property and clothing, and reviews, investigates, and reports on claims of missing inmate property.

Completes data entry tasks by utilizing a computer tracking system indicating receipt, inventory, disposition and/or release information relative to inmate personal property.

Ensures that property is prepared for transfer to a County facility or the Central Property and Evidence Unit within the time period allotted and that all property control cards are completed.

Purges inmate's personal property and clothing items stored at a custody facility.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Six months of experience, involving storekeeping, stock, property or warehouse inventory and inventory maintenance.

LICENSE

A valid California Class C Driver License* is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a driver license prior to appointment.

Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-state applicants will be required to obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

PHYSICAL CLASS

Physical Class III Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

  • License Information: Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed.

    A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVNG RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE

As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

This examination will consist of a written test covering filing, checking for errors, vocabulary, spelling and reading comprehension weighted 100%.

TRANSFER SCORES

Applicants that have taken identical test part(s) for this or any other exam within the last 12 months will have their test responses for the identical test part(s) automatically transferred to this examination. This examination contains test parts that may be used in the future for new examinations. Upon acceptance of your application, your scores may be transferred to the new examination and you may not be allowed to retake any identical test part(s) for at least (12) months.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED

As a lead worker, incumbents provide technical direction to less experienced Evidence and Property Custodians. Incumbents are responsible for ensuring that physical evidence and other property seized or found by the Sheriff's Department are protected from loss or damage and that the chain of evidence and property records are properly maintained. Incumbents are also responsible for the release, destruction, or disposal of seized or found items as required by law, court order, or departmental policy and guidelines. Incumbents may function as senior or lead person and be responsible for providing technical direction to a shift of Evidence and Property Custodians assigned to a custody facility. Incumbents must be capable of driving a pick-up truck and/or, on occasion, driving a larger truck in order to pick up evidence or other property from various Sheriff's and inter-agency facilities or crime scenes for transport to an appropriate Sheriff's facility. Incumbents also operate and ensure maintenance of unit vehicles and equipment such as trucks and forklifts.
