Job Description:

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is looking to fill an Event Set-up and Tear-down Crew (Utility Worker) to assist the state.

The State Historical Museum of Iowa is seeking qualified candidates to join the Event Set-up & Tear-down team. This part time position requires candidates to work evenings, weekends and long hours, with shifts ranging from one hour to three hours, depending on the size of the event. The Event Set-up & Tear-down team is responsible for executing event floor plans in various parts of the facility and tear down of the spaces in an efficient manner.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and perform other duties as assigned. Primary functions include;

  • Set-up and tear-down including: chairs, tables, pipe and drape and other items as needed for events.

  • Handle folding chairs, stacking chairs, tables of various shapes and sizes, drapery and skirting, and stage pieces.

  • Complete event floor plans accurately and efficiently.

  • Provide excellent customer service assistance to internal staff and external clients.

  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex instructions.

  • Must be able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate with all staff.

  • Ability to frequently work both independently and as part of a team for a variety of tasks.

  • Inventory event equipment, maintain integrity of equipment and report any issues to lead supervisor.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by lead supervisor as needed.

Key competencies which are needed for this position include;

  • Experience in a public facility highly preferred.

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely.

  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must have a demonstrated ability to function in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to frequently bend, crouch, stand for long periods of time and move quickly.

No specific education or experience is required.

You can learn more about Spectra at Responsibilities * Leads team of 10+ in housekeeping and set-ups * Direct housekeeping, set up crews, and temporary staff during events * Trains and motivates part time staff in daily activities * Responsible for thorough execution of daily check lists * Provide excellent customer service assistance to internal and external clients * Promptly reports any concerns or personnel issues to Operations Management * Verifies and reports information from daily cleaning checklists throughout facility * Responsible for filling out and verifying quality room sets and other event paperwork * Operates an assortment of equipment including: forklifts, pallet jacks, buffers/burnishers, rider sweepers/scrubbers, walk behind scrubbers, blowers, vacuums, snow removal equipment and others as required. * Handle folding chairs, stacking chairs, tables of various shapes and sizes, drapery and skirting * Responsible for safe use of various supplies including a variety of cleaning chemicals, mops, brooms, shovels and scrapers in completion daily tasks * Responsible for accurately completing room sets Qualifications * High school diploma or equivalent * Demonstrated ability to function in a fast paced, high-pressure environment * Ability to read and accurately interpret event resumes for room sets * Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and meet deadlines * Experience in public facility strongly preferred * Familiarity with OSHA requirements * Demonstrated experience in handling multiple tasks at one time and meet deadlines * Demonstrated ability and proficiency with various event sets * Complete and pass on-site Forklift Certification class within 6 months of hire * Demonstrated ability to lead teams of 10+ employees with minimal direction * Superior interpersonal and communication skills * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team * Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in the English language, both orally and in writing * Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license highly desirable * Demonstrated self-starter * Flexible availability to work a varied schedule including long hours, days, nights, weekends & holidays.
