The Estimator is responsible for reviewing project documents, estimating labor and materials costs, and communicating financial costs and project timelines to internal and external customers in the preparation and delivery of estimates and proposals.

Position Description

Essential Functions

  • Review specifications and construction drawings in the development of scopes of work including identifying required scopes/trades and quantities

  • Review contracts prior to bid to ensure that terms, conditions, exclusions, and qualifications included in the owner's contract are appropriately addressed in the cost estimate

  • Estimate self-performed and subcontractor performed work, pricing the labor, equipment, and material costs

  • Review and incorporate historical data from purchase orders, bid tabulations, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, job costs system, etc. into unit cost, man-hour, and crew production rates

  • Source vendors and subcontractors for various projects

  • Coordinate, obtain, and review vendor and subcontractor quotations prior to bid

  • Perform mechanical process piping takeoff and pricing

  • Perform or coordinate quantity takeoff, assembling direct cost estimate and analyzing alternate construction methods/resources to determine and improve cost effectiveness

  • Review design options and/or recommend best solution/alternative based on cost-effectiveness, value engineering or availability of materials

  • Support project management by estimating extra work items and change orders

Education

  • Diploma in construction/engineering technology

Experience and other requirements

  • 4 to 8 years of progressive responsibility estimating in a heavy and industrial construction environment

  • Experience reviewing and interpreting regulatory requirements and industry standards

  • Experience with discipline-specific industry standards (API, ASME, AWWA, NACE, ACI, etc.) is preferred

  • Experience with developing bidding strategies associated with various bid delivery methodologies (fixed price, design-build, CMAR, cost-plus) preferred

  • Ability to produce accurate estimates from conceptual and schematic drawings

  • Ability to produce detailed, final cost and time estimates

  • Ability to assess site exposures/construction risks/constructability issues and be able to appropriately analyze cost and reflect these in an estimate

  • Ability to identify value-engineering alternatives

  • Ability to travel occasionally as needed for site visits and bid delivery

  • Attention to detail is a must

  • Ability to work under strict deadlines is a must

Summary: As a Substation Estimator, you will be responsible for estimating substation bid projects with utility contractors, E.P.C firms and renewable energy developers. The estimator will work from bills of material provided by the customer, match products to suppliers, prepare pricing and answer commercial questions required to complete the proposal. Our ideal candidate will have understating of utility substations, ability to develop relationships with customers, is detailed focus, and can handle multiple projects at once. This position interacts with customers, quotes team, sales team and the warehouse to manage projects from begin to completion. Responsibilities: * Acts as a member of the Project Services Team Responsible for estimating, bidding and/or managing project-oriented work for both prospective and existing business relationships being presented through our Project Services Team. * Assists branch locations in preparing proposals for substation projects for their local utilities. * Coordination with manufacturers to create project contacts, material list development, price quotation and order execution. * Utilize tools used by the Project Services Team to organize our opportunities, manage the project in the system, and insure payment. * Responsible for estimating, bidding and/or managing project-oriented work for both prospective and existing business relationships * Primary liaison between customers/business partners responsible for all project tasks, timelines and issue resolution ensuring to successful completion of the project * Lead multiple projects from inception to completion * Review, resolve discrepancies and supply submittal packages for all projects * Monitor and communicate project status/issues to sales team * Coordinate with manufacturers on project contacts, material list development, price quotation and order execution for both prospective and existing clients, document existing products and services used, potential product sales and related selling strategy * Develops relationships with new and existing customers and provides information to maximize sales volume * Understands sales objectives, strategies, advertising, and promotions and works to achieve them as presented with this role Qualifications: * Utility and/or Electrical experience required * Knowledge of substations products and design is required * Quotation/Estimating experience preferred * Ability to learn and understand electrical plans, specifications and drawings. * Technical learning: quick study on using technology in support of sales process. * In-depth knowledge of sales and purchasing software functions * Detail oriented, possessing good analytical skills; ability to anticipate problems & diffuse situations * Excellent organizational skills * Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation * Maintain vendor lists, catalogs and brochures * Communicate effectively both orally and in writing to exchange information Benefits: We offer a competitive salary; outstanding benefits package and the professional advantages of an environment that supports your development and recognized your achievements.
