Summary:
Assist teachers to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the certified teacher.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist teachers prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
Assist teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
Assumes responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special
medical, physical, communicative need.
Works with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty. Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Qualifications:
Minimum of (1) year experience working with students and meets the standards of Highly Qualified Status. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and completed two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (48 college credit hours); or received an
Associate's degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher learning;
or a minimum score of 450 on the ETS Parapro Exam.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
The Paraprofessional
ESS should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. The ability to speak clearly and concisely in English. Bilingual ability is a plus. A Paraprofessional
ESS should be able to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Louisiana Department of Education policies.

Work Environment Conditions:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Moderate standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing and lifting can be required. Must be able to lift 50-150 pounds. May be required to assist with functional use of a wheelchair, wheelchair lifts, ramp, other mobility aids and other OT/PT apparatus. Employees should further be able to maintain emotional control under stress. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment. Occasional exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather may occur. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

Technological Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in general use of a computer, the use of Email as a form of communication, and other job-specific equipment, software, and/or applications.
