FRANKLIN COUNTY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: ESL TUTOR

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

PAY GRADE H

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under limited supervision, provides support to the teacher in the instruction of other than English speaking students. Performs tasks to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. Reports to the teacher and/or principal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Sets up the physical setting for the most successful tutoring.

Tutors/interprets according to the language of the student or students.

Meets with teachers and staff as deemed appropriate.

Participates in meetings with the educational team to provide input into the planning for lessons and activities as needed.

Facilitates communication between the student(s) and his/her peers and the student(s) and adults in the school environment.

Tutors students who are non-English speaking under the direction of the teacher.

Provides feedback to teachers upon request.

Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.

Serves as proctor during testing.

Attends workshops.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Teaches non-English classes to students or staff as requested.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the teacher and/or principal.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Must meet the "No Child Left Behind" requirements to be "highly qualified." Associate's degree in education or related field and two years of experience working with children preferred and proficiency in foreign language(s) preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to lift and move objects related to the job functions. Physical demand requirements are for light work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable characteristics of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to students.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read forms and materials associated with the job functions. Proficiency in specific foreign language.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately in using instructional objects.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.

Working knowledge of the core subjects and non-English language at the grade level to which employment assignment is made.

Some knowledge of the school organization and its community.

Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages.

Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans.

Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective.

Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor.

Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension.

Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment.

Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.

Ability to record and store data accurately.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
