Primary Purpose:

Provide Emergent Bilingual (EB) students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the subject areas assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Work to ensure that appropriate intervention needs are not misidentified due to language barriers.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate (ELAR preferred)

English as a Second Language supplemental certificate or endorsement

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of core academic ESL strategies

Knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Fluent in Spanish, as demonstrated by certification or district-selected skills test

Ability to instruct and manage student behavior

Ability to work well and in a positive manner with staff, students, and public

Ability to use computer software to develop spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

Demonstrated competency in the area(s) assigned; prior experience working with students.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Support identified Emergent Bilingual (EB) students and families through direct instructional intervention, training, and coordination of services.

  • Develop and implement intervention and support lesson plans for EB students in core academics for grades PK - 5 that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.

  • Work with additional intervention staff, counseling staff, and campus administrators to ensure that services for struggling EB students are coordinated for student needs.

  • Overcome language barriers for families of EB students who are actively in Tier 2 or Tier 3 of intervention to ensure a common understanding between home and school of the student's needs and progress.

  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers, nurses, counselors, and administrators to modify curricula as needed for EB students who also participate in special programs according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP), or 504 plan.

  • Work with other members of staff as appropriate to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.

  • Plan and assign work to instructional partner(s) and/or volunteer(s) and oversee completion.

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Interpret data to make academic adjustments for individual students.

  • Monitor the academic progress of EB students in grades PK - 5, including those who have recently exited the ESL program.

  • Prepare documents and student data reports and serve on LPAC committees as requested by campus administration.

  • Serve as a member of the districtwide ESL team: occasional support for LPAC and/or language proficiency testing at other campuses as requested.

  • Serve as a professional learning resource districtwide regarding effective strategies to increase the progress of EB students. Lead professional development large or small groups as requested.

  • Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.

  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

  • Perform assigned duties on campus as assigned by administration (recess, dismissal, etc.).

  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings, staff development, and serve on staff committees as required.
