Position Summary

All Engineering and Computer Science students are required to complete multiple full-time co-ops in order to graduate (Engineering students have 3 required full-time co-ops Computer Science students have 2). The College of Engineering & Science Co-op Coordinator and Career Advisor's shepherds primarily Engineering and Computer Science, but also science students in developing the mindsets, skillsets, and confidence to successfully find co-op employment opportunities while they are a student, and a meaningful career path upon graduation. This position plays a critical role in guiding and coaching students in developing ownership of their career journey. The work begins with orienting and coaching new students, continues through the co-op experiences/courses, on-going mentoring and outreach, engagement with employers and culminates in the student graduating with a suitable job offer (if that is their career plan). The position also assists in communicating with all stakeholders regarding the co-op program and collecting data from students and employers critical for ABET accreditation.

This position works also closely with College of Engineering & Science, the University Career Center, and the Alumni Office personnel to build and enhance relationships with industry partners and alumni.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Co-op Program Management

  • Develop communication strategies, structures, and processes to assist engineering (3 co-ops required), computer science (2 co-ops required), and science (co-op optional) students in securing co-op assignments. Manage the co-op courses associated with co-op work experience.

  • Work with the University Career Center to develop, maintain, and disseminate career resources, such as guides and online tools, to support students' career development. Communicate policies, procedures, and guidelines to all stakeholders (students, parents, employers, alums, faculty, staff, etc.) Use a variety of communication mediums appropriate to targeted audiences.

  • Orient students to Co-op and Career Services through the Introduction to Co-op course.

  • In coordination with the University Career Center, organize and execute a variety networking and career-oriented events that connect students with potential employers, alumni, and industry professionals, including, career fairs, information sessions, onsite interviews, practice interviews, etc.

  • Review and approve/disapprove co-op opportunities and ensure proper documentation for co-op assignments secured and recorded.

  • Review portfolios and presentations for experiential substitution for co-op.

Career Development Coaching and Support

  • Provide one-on-one and group career coaching to E&S students, helping students secure co-op work experiences, investigate career options, and develop and communicate their experience, strengths, and skills.

  • Provide additional support and development plans for students behind on the required co-op schedule.

  • Work alongside the University Career Center to help students prepare resumes, cover letters, and applications for co-op positions, conduct mock interviews and provide feedback to help students improve their interviewing skills. Offer feedback and guidance to enhance students' job application materials.

  • Provide students, faculty, and staff with information on industry trends, job market conditions, and employer expectations.

  • Work with the Alumni Affairs office to offer the Introduction to Networking and Mentoring activities in the Intro to Co-op course.

  • Work with the University Career Center to assist E&S alums with career-development as appropriate.

Evaluation, Compliance, and Documentation

  • Ensure offer letters received for all co-op students and prepare reports on employment information.

  • Track and report on student registration and completion of co-op requirements. Track and report on student experience and performance during their co-op placements. Conduct site visits and surveys. Contact with co-op supervisors for feedback.

  • Ensure all student and employer records are accurately maintained and comply with institutional policies. Collect data from students and employers needed by the College and accreditation.

  • Develop strategies and structures and work with faculty, chairs and administrators to ensure all Engineering & Computer Science students register for co-op prep class, correctly register for co-op credit courses.

Employer and Alumni Relations

  • Expand and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national employers to secure co-op placements and to get feedback on improving students' holistic career development. Identify employers willing to hire rising sophomores and international students.

  • Organize events that connect students with potential employers, alumni, and industry professionals (industry tours, etc.)

  • Engage with alumni to create mentorship opportunities and gain insights into career pathways for current students.

  • Assist in identifying opportunities for industry sponsorships for events, equipment, projects, and research opportunities.

  • Assist in identifying opportunities for custom corporate education for workshops and micro-credentials.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
  • A college degree
  • Employment
  • Two years to five years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Career development experience, irs equired.

  • Bachelor's degree, required.

  • 2 or more years' experience working in university-industry engagement and/or relations, preferred.

  • 5 or more years' experience working in engineering-related industries, preferred.

  • Experience in mentoring and advising college students, preferred.

  • Technical skills, such as updating online information; maintaining information on a shared drive; strong technical communication and data skills, including Excel and other technologies, required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in a college or work setting, required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Attention to detail in providing supportive feedback to students.

  • Empathy and culturally sensitive mentoring and advising.

  • Strong communication skills in multiple modalities.

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

Commensurate with experience

Anticipated Schedule

Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
