Purpose:

UPMC Altoona is looking for a full time ER/Clinical Secretary.

The ER/Clinical Secretary functions as an Emergency Department team member by working with the nursing staff indirect and indirect nursing care of the patient. This includes but not limited to clerical duties, computer use, stocking, ordering of supplies, cleaning, data collection, patient transportation and public relations.

This is an AFSCME position posted on April 10th, 2019.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Patient Care when asked with : Transporting patients to CT. Assists in and out of bed to bathroom. Assists with food trays and patient/family needs. Assists on/off bedpans. Holding patient for treatments. Answers call bells. Assist with any other request.

  • Assists in the orientation of all new Emergency Department staff: nursing, trauma assistants, and secretaries.

  • Consultations - notifies consults, documents time notified, monitors return calls for re-notification and for documentation.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to increase of patient flow and emergency conditions and sets appropriate priorities.

  • Department Orders

  • Responsible for clerical and clinical supplies ordering and stocking.
  • EKG - places orders, charges all EKG's. Reviews all EKG's for name. If no name, must review all EKG's to assure and clarify name.
  • EMS Radio
  • Responsible for assuring command sheets are on chart with correct name and information. Answers radio when available.
  • EMS Room
  • Responsible for stocking EMS pyxis, linen removal and dietary needs
  • Knowledge of Code Grey Protocol and activation

  • Laboratory

  • Labels print in ER. Assures blood work is completed with labels gone. Transporting specimens. Verify cath vs. clear void specimen. Abnormal results to physician immediately.
  • Old Chart/Films
  • Need to assure records, films to floor; if not sent, transport of these things to floor.
  • Places orders through Ibex documentation system. Answers telephone professionally and appropriate
  • 3 lines that override
  • Radiology
  • Assures BUN/Creat are drawn or patient older than 65 years old that IV contrast may be needed. Call results to CT prior to scan. ID allergies when placing orders. Abnormal results to physician
  • Trauma
  • Responsible for trauma paging system and troubleshooting. Responsible for consulting physicians during traumas. Responsible for triaging patient into Ibex before documentation and orders can be completed. Notify air/ground transportation. Responsible for completing trauma response record

Qualifications

  • Education and Formal Training Required: Must be graduate from a medical secretarial program, medical assistant program, two year active EMS experience as EMT or EMT/P, or equivalent experience.

  • Experience Required: None

  • Specific abilities: 1.Adapt to constant change inherent in healthcare. 2.Maintain good working relationships with the Medical Staff, Administration and other departmental personnel who are involved in the care of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

Insures clinical program occurs daily as scheduled. Is responsible for daily treatment services occurring as required, identify/Implement/Evaluate evidence-based treatment modalities. Insures fidelity to EBTs in treatment services, provide support to counselors to ensure EB modalities are consistently utilized both in group and individual sessions, attend provider meetings and explore other opportunities to engage with external stakeholders, support marketing efforts by providing tours and information as needed, support and assist facility risk leaders with maintaining a safe environment of care, complete program specific reports as they relate to treatment services, participate and assist with licensing, payor, and internal audits and compliance reviews.</p><p><br></p><p>The right candidate will help to maintain strong clinical program through leadership of staff team. Capable of giving appropriate clinical feedback and role modeling to the counselors. Advises counselors on treatment goals. Capable of role modeling to the clients and staff. Staff able to work together to effectively meet the needs of the clients. Maintains positive relationship with referral sources and families. Satisfaction Surveys and Chart Monitors meet or exceed 85% compliance. Maintains compliance with documentation in charts through oversight and audit procedures.
