The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking an Equipment Technician Lead in our North Central Region. This Equipment Technician Lead will provide the necessary journey-level repair and preventative maintenance skills to keep the WSDOT equipment fleet in a safe and serviceable reliable condition, by performing journey-level inspections, troubleshoot, diagnoses, service, and repair on all types of equipment used in on-site back up power generation, highway maintenance or heavy and/or industrial/commercial equipment, or motorized farm type equipment.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain various stationary and mobile generators, gas, diesel, propane, and UPS units, that are used throughout the region, some sites with remote location.

  • Inspect, diagnose, and make needed repairs to equipment.

  • Utilize digital software, such as MultiMate and scanning tools, to diagnose and repair computer-controlled systems.

  • Install and repair WAF (wireless Automate Fueling) system and fabrication and installation of all related parts and components of numerous systems.

  • Design, diagnose, repair, and install hydraulic systems.

  • Perform machinist, body and glass repair, and welding fabrication work. Fabricate brackets, attachments, and specialized equipment attachments. Paint and perform touch up paint to preserve the exterior finish of equipment.

  • Coordinate with WSDOT Facilities personnel and licensed electricians on the electrical needs, switching, installation, and removal of generators, UPS systems, and transfer switch gear, to include fuel source, intake air and exhaust systems.

  • Monitor all regional on-site power supply systems.

  • Assess equipment damage.

  • Operate and road tests class A, B, and C vehicles and other equipment.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to operate vehicles in Washington State or obtain within six (6) months of hire. WSDOT will assist in training for licensing requirement.

  • Obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification.

  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.

AND

  • Three (3) years of managerial or administrative experience in operating an automotive, heavy, and/or industrial commercial vehicles or equipment fleet.

OR

  • Three years (3) of experience as a journey-level mechanic repairing light and heavy equipment.

  • Intermediate computer skills to operate various computer programs, such as Microsoft Office applications, internal WSDOT applications, and the internet.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Graduation from a tech school or completion of an apprentice program specializing in automotive, heavy equipment repair, or on-site / back up power generation systems.

  • EGSA certification in on-site power generation.

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in Automotive or Heavy Truck repair.

  • Fabrication and welding experience and/or training certificate.

  • Experience with hydraulic systems.

  • Experience operating shop tools such as welders, drill presses, grinders, presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.

  • Proficient in operating Windows based computers and software, such as MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook; Cloud computing; virtual meeting software, such as MS Teams; and various system databases utilized for project tracking, and information and asset management.

  • Experience leading and/or supervising employees, providing clear direction, and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
