The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Fleet Services Division. This position supports DNR's programs by ensuring the agency's fleet of vehicles and equipment are ready to work and safe to operate. This position serves as a journey-level mechanic performing service, maintenance, and repair to light automotive, medium and heavy truck, commercial/industrial, small engine, agricultural, and heavy-duty construction equipment based at the Tumwater equipment shop.Responsibilities:

  • Provide regular service and repairs to DNR and other agency fleet vehicles
  • Work with a team of Equipment Technicians, ensuring quality workmanship and time standards are upheld
  • Be available to work outside the shop, in the field, and out of a service truck in all types of weather
  • Attend and provide input and training at monthly shop/safety meeting
  • Ensure safety protocols are adhered to at all times

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of (5) years of verifiable experience performing journey-level maintenance and repair on Automotive, Medium-Heavy Duty trucks, and, or Construction-Forestry equipment;

OR, completion of an approved Automotive / Medium-Heavy Truck apprenticeship or trade school program and (3) years of verifiable practical experience working as a journey-level technician.

  • High school graduate;

OR Possession of a GED certificate.

  • Experience completing routine and advanced automotive, medium-heavy duty equipment repairs to a journey-level standard.
  • Experience navigating the internet and intranet environment and using multiple business software applications.
  • Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and fleet management software applications.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team on assigned tasks. Excellent analytical and diagnostic skills. Excellent interpersonal and customer skills. Ability to effectively prioritize and schedule repair workload.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate verbally and in writing with diverse individuals and groups. This includes actively listening and conveying thoughts clearly, concisely, and appropriately.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • The position is based at the Tumwater Compound, with a high percentage of work being in the field in various terrain and weather conditions, while frequently having to lift, position, and move heavy items up to 75 pounds without assistance. There is a percentage of this position that will require work in the field for certain repairs, working out of a service truck, or in other region shops throughout the state.
  • The position requires moderate travel within the region, with occasional travel outside the region for training, working with region mechanics, and/or fire assignments.
  • A valid unrestricted driver's license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Air conditioning certification
  • Class A CDL
  • A.A., bachelor's degree, or Technical School Diploma
  • Experience with repairs of fire suppression or similar equipment.
  • Air Brake Certification
