Job Description: Benefits Supplemental Questions
To perform semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the tractor, small engines, and mechanical equipment belonging to Transportation. To maintain equipment records and purchase of needed parts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, or air driven tools
Plans, carries out and evaluates preventative maintenance schedules for all small engine equipment
Operates a diagnostic instrument on diesel and gasoline engines for mechanical and operational problems
Changes and repairs tires and tubes
Tests, services, and repairs, tractors, and mechanical equipment
Repairs, brakes, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems
Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work
Maintains records and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment
Purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance
Cuts and welds metal and performs metal fabrication and related work
Maintain shop area
Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and tractor, and performs or schedules needed repairs
Evaluates status of hydraulic equipment and performs other duties as assigned
May serve as a member of various employee committees
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license and comply with City of Killeen driving policy.
Performs all On-call assignments as outlined in On-Call Schedule and Departmental Policy.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent, and
Two (2) years of related experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment
Ability to carry out assigned projects to completion
Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public
Working knowledge of gas and diesel engines,
Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance
Must have a valid Texas drivers license by date of hire
Must acquire a valid Texas Class B CDL within 12 months from date of hire
Must have or acquire within thirty (30) days from date of hire all National Institute Management Systems (N.I.M.S.) certifications as required by City and position
Must acquire a valid Texas Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within 18 months from date of hire
Tools and Equipment Used
Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools, equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work, mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of tractors and small mowing equipment, telephone and safety equipment as required, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of equipment.
