Join the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) - Richmond District, where innovation meets infrastructure! These are the foundational drivers of our success and, as an Equipment Repair Technician, you will play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Richmond District is seeking an individual to diagnose vehicle and equipment failures using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on-line resources for our Ashland Equipment Repair Shop. This position will perform a wide variety of general maintenance and repair functions on VDOT's overall fleet. In this role, you will promote and practice safe work habits while performing basic repairs and services on light, heavy duty, and diesel trucks; road construction and maintenance equipment; hydraulic systems; and electrical components.

Specific Responsibilities will include:

Diagnose and Repair

  • Diagnose, repair and complete basic tasks on a variety of equipment types such as tires, brakes, lighting, pumps and valves. Use basic scan tools to read and clear check engine light codes.

Perform Repair Work

  • Perform repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment and tools to include engines, transmissions, driveline components, electrical and computer systems fuel injection systems, air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components and air brakes.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to the preventative maintenance schedule and guidelines.

Maintain Documents and Records

  • Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate documents and work orders in computer system. Perform time and leave entry in appropriate systems.

Virginia State Inspections

  • Perform safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection program for vehicles and equipment.

Welding Repair and Fabrication

  • Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.

Emergency Operations

  • Prepare equipment for emergency operations. Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations to include on-the-road repairs.

Perform Manual Labor

  • Perform manual labor to complete assigned tasks. Complete assigned tasks and projects as instructed.

This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this position are required during emergency situations, which may include, but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations, at times outside of normal working hours. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment. Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.

Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy-duty equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner. Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.

Ability to read and comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to maintain accurate records and reports. Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.

Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Safety shoes required. Valid driver's license required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of training, experience, or education in Automative Repair, Maintenance or related field desired. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications desired.

Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment. Experience using cutting and welding equipment. Virginia State Inspection License and Class A CDL desired.

Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Must possess a valid Driver's License. Will be required to work to support emergency operations outside of normal work schedule.

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. Approved Safety Shoes are required.

There is an opportunity for reimbursement. NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification.

Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSAapproved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
