Job Summary:

This position is responsible for inspecting new vehicles and equipment, interpreting written vehicle/equipment specifications and evaluating compliance, product quality and overall workmanship in accordance with specifications and established ADOT standards. Installs 2-way radios, electrical accessories, components and assemblies on new vehicles and equipment in order to meet the configurations requested of the end users.

This position is also eligible to participate in the ASE Stipend Pay Program, employees can earn up to $14,400 a year with qualifying certifications. We reimburse 100% of the cost for passed tests and offer training assistance!

Uniforms provided to shop employees at no charge and are eligible to participate in the Safety-toe Shoe reimbursement program (100% of cost up to $250.00 every other calendar year).

Personal Tool Allowance of $1000.00 per calendar year and Personal Tool Insurance Coverage 100% for qualified losses on state premises

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 6:00am - 2:30pm

Anticipated hiring salary is $23.5741 hourly ($49,034 annually) with a potential to earn up to $30.4971 hourly ($63,434 annually) when ASE Triple Master Certified Technician status is obtained.

Job Duties:

Inspects all new vehicles/equipment purchased through or by Equipment Services to ensure vendor compliance with contract specifications, terms and conditions. Provides accurate detailed documentation of discrepancies/deficiencies in meeting written specifications and established ADOT standards.

Installs accessory components (toolboxes, light bars, refuel tanks, steps, bumpers, hitches, camper shells, etc.) to ensure new and used vehicles and equipment meet the needs of the end user. Installs identification decals, license plates and registration certificates on new and used vehicles and equipment as required to comply with statutory requirements.

Prepares surplus vehicles and equipment for disposal, including removal of all State identification markings, lights, license plates and registrations. Performs minor mechanical adjustments, repairs or parts replacement on surplus vehicles and equipment to enhance resale value. Marshals vehicles and equipment in storage yards in preparation for disposal or pending re-issue instructions.

Re-inspects new vehicles and equipment returned from vendors to verify corrective action is in compliance with contract specifications, terms and conditions. Works with supervisor to document any outstanding compliance/workmanship issues noted.

Prepares and cleans used vehicles and equipment for re-issue to ensure a safe and serviceable unit is provided to the end user. Assists other Equipment Repair Technicians in detailed service/repair tasks as required to complete minor repairs in a timely manner. Inspects, diagnose and makes repairs to reissue vehicles and equipment being returned to service.

Operate vehicles and/or equipment requiring a driver's license.

Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:

  • Basic mechanical, technical and operation of automotive, light/medium/heavy duty truck/off-road construction equipment and specialized highway maintenance equipment.

  • Power plant, drive train, hydraulic system, electrical and electrical controls system functions, operation, inspection, diagnosis and repair procedures.

  • Proper use and care of shop tools and equipment.

  • Safety regulations, directives and policies affecting the work environment.

  • Parts procurement practices and inventory control procedures.

  • Using Fleet Focus equipment management software.

Skill:

  • Focusing on procedures and processes and developing effective solutions within resources available.

  • Safe operation of hand tools and related shop equipment.

  • Safe operation of materials handling equipment, i.e. forklift.

  • Effective written and verbal communication.

  • Methodically approaching challenges.

Ability:

  • Follow oral and written instructions.

  • Input data into the equipment management system.

  • Read and interpret equipment and technical specification language and apply reason in determining compliance or noncompliance with contract requirements.

  • Exercise flexibility and be adaptive; adjust actions to changing situations and priorities as required.

  • Recognize self limitations and know when to ask for assistance.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Ability to utilize a PC and PC programs such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

  • Ability to manage time effectively.

  • Lift up to 50 lbs; push/pull up 90 lbs; pass a physical exam.

Selective Preference(s):

Three years experience in a fleet maintenance environment to include installation and assembly, and interpreting written vehicle specs.

ASE certification and/or Medium/Heavy Duty Truck, Bus or Heavy Equipment Manufacturers certifications are highly desirable.

Successful candidate should have their own tools for the position.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Employment is contingent upon passing a medical/physical examination.
