Equipment Operator (Street And Sewer Maintenance Division)

PRIMARY FUNCTION

• Performs skilled manual work in the operation of heavy standard motor trucks, crew trucks, material handing trucks and simple to moderately complex automotive equipment.

• Responsible for safe and efficient operation of automotive equipment in performing such tasks as hauling grit and screenings to the landfill.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Transports debris and asphalt to landfill. Operates arrow board, generator, and air compressor. Cleans catch basins.

• Maintains accurate log records of waste material hauled to the landfill.

• Wash trucks and make minor repairs to related equipment.

• May be required to operate equipment listed in lower Equipment Operator positions and/or operate limited equipment of a higher classification.

• May be required to supervise a small group of unskilled workers as needed, and/or perform semi-skilled work requiring the use of hand tools.

• May be required to perform manual labor to load or unload materials. Performs all related work as required.

• Possess and maintain a valid "CDL" Class "B" driver's license with an active medical examiner's certificate, a good driving record, and ability to pass drug screening as mandated by the Federal Department of Transportation for CDL drivers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Graduation from a high school and experience in the operation of trucks, tractors and similar equipment, or any equivalent combination of experience and instruction that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Knowledge of traffic laws involved in the operation of automotive equipment. Knowledge of City street layout.

• Ability to operate related construction equipment. Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of automotive and related equipment. Ability to detect operating defects in automotive equipment.

• Ability to understand oral and written instructions.

• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.

• Ability to work effectively with employees and the public.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Regularly work in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

• Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. Occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and smell.

• Specific vision required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical and drug test.

City residency is required within one (1) year of employment.
