The Prince George's County Government Department of The Environment is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Equipment Operator III position, grade A17, within its Resource Recovery Division.

About the Position:

This is supervisory level, skilled craft work within the County whereby incumbent has demonstrated skill and proficiency in the operation of all types of light, medium and heavy power equipment. Incumbents are responsible for conducting in-house training programs for equipment operators.The incumbentis responsible for supervising, leading, and training lower-level equipment operators and other skilled/semi-skilled employees in all department functions and for ensuring adherence to proper safety practices and sound maintenance procedures.Work is performed under the general supervision of aCrew Supervisor or higher-level supervisor who evaluates performance in terms of work safety, and its overall contribution to the equipment operation function.

Examples of Work

What You'll Do:

  • Operates all light to heavy Landfill construction equipment including, but not limited to: D-8 dozer, front-end loader (tracked or rubber tired), 10-wheel dump truck, scraper, off-road dump truck, Landfill compactor, fuel/lube truck and street flusher.

  • Performs daily pre-trip/post-trip inspections and manufacturer's daily maintenance checklist procedures including, but not limited to: grease, tire air pressure, engine fluid, hydraulic fluid levels and fuel quantity. Adjusts fluid levels to meet operational standards.

  • Makes occasional "running" repairs to vehicle or equipment during field operations in order to provide timely operation to meet work schedules.

  • Assists mechanics in preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.

  • Exercises the full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities over subordinate positions as defined in the Personnel Law.

  • Conducts training sessions for subordinate equipment operators and other skilled/semi-skilled employees in the safe and efficient operation of equipment.

  • Receives instructions from supervisor concerning work to be performed and equipment to be used.

  • Ensures compliance with safety standards at all times.

  • Successfully completes annual safety training and/or examinations in accordance with MOSHA/OSHA safety requirements.

  • Adheres to applicable safety precautions when operating equipment near utility lines, cables, trees, or other known obstacles, either overhead or underground, in order to avoid personal injury or equipment damage.

  • Reports any on-the-job personal injury immediately to the supervisor.

Qualifications

What You'll Need:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years as an Equipment Operator II or completion of a standard grade school courseand three (3) years of experience operating light to heavy power equipment; plus, a valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements is required upon appointment in order to perform job-related duties and responsibilities.

  • Candidate must successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements and a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Upon selection, the candidate must:

  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.

  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.

  • Participate as an "Essential" employee in the department's snow and ice control program and other emergency or special activities as assigned.

  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather, dust, times of day/week, including weather emergencies and other types of emergency conditions.

  • Must participate as an Essential Employee in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4.

  • Must possess and maintain a current Class A, Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to include current DOT physical certification card.

  • Must have a current Motor Vehicle Administration report with a satisfactory driving record.

  • Must be able to work before and after hours, rotating weekends and holidays.

  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical to include alcohol and drug testing.

  • Must be able to write, read, comprehend and complete electronic and paper forms.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY:

Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
