Definition:

To perform skilled work operating one of several types of light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer of move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of parks, streets, and other public properties. Reports vehicle or equipment or problems to supervisor. Assists in the maintenance painting and repair of street and school crossing. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required. Employee may be assigned to higher level equipment when necessary. (See attached sheet examples of equipment).

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the full journey level class in the Equipment Operator series. Employees in this class are distinguished from the Equipment Operator I by the performance of the full range of duties and responsibilities assignment. Employee at this level receive only occasional instructions as new and unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives general supervision from the Crew Leader, Equipment Operator III, Supervisor and Superintendent. May exercise technical supervision over Field Maintenance Workers (Crewperson) and Operator I.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operates large sweepers, loaders, mowers, dump trucks, and other types of light to heavy equipment. Provides on-the-job training to new employees or Equipment Operators I & II. Directs co-workers in safety precautions in operating or working around equipment. Performs minor maintenance or service checks on equipment. Removes refuse and debris from drainage channels, storm drains, streets and alleys. Prepares daily report and activity logs. Deposits asphalt unto surface to be covered and rake and rolls asphalt. Inspects work sites for possible safety hazards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Other important Duties and Responsibilities

Knowledge of:

Characteristics and limitations of the equipment being operated. Safety procedures related to the equipment being operated. Maintenance and basic repair procedures of a variety of equipment and power tools used to perform job assignments. Basic construction methods and practices. Material used in the maintenance and repair of streets and alleys.

Ability to:

Communicate clearly and give simple instruction. Proficiently operate and maintain various types of ground maintenance equipment. Maintain Physical condition appropriate to the performance assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

  • Lift & carry 80 lbs., push, pull & drag up to 80 lbs. of materials; climb, crawl, kneel, squat, stoop and bend freely when participating in related job duties

  • Walking or standing for an extended period of time.

  • Lifting and carrying

  • Operating assigned equipment and tools

  • Working under harsh weather conditions

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • Making observations

  • Communicating with others

  • Reading and writing

  • Operating assigned vehicles, equipment and tools

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Any combination and experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualified.

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in related field preferred.

Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at the level necessary for the successful job performance.

License and Certificates:

Completion of 8th grade required; High school diploma or GED preferred. Must possess a Texas Commercial "CDL" driver's license Class "B" plus all required endorsements. Must have acceptable driving record.

Will be exposed to work outdoors in a construction site environment with exposure to loud noise, dangerous equipment and inclement weather conditions scudding extreme heat; will travel from site to site.
