Purpose of Job

Under general supervision, operates a variety of medium to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Position requires a high degree of operator skill and understanding of the water-industry related equipment. Additionally, performs manual work duties as assigned. Works in Water Management Department or other City departments if needed.

II. Essential Job Duties

A. Operates Vehicles, Equipment and Machinery

  • Operates a variety of medium to heavy-duty equipment used in department activities which may include a large dump truck (10-ton capacity or larger), excavator, small dump truck, asphalt roller, rubber-tire front-end loader, tractor, mower, bush hog, skid steer, chipper, jackhammer, air compressor, pavement saw, tapping machine and underground piercing tools.

  • Monitors equipment operation to maintain safe and efficient proper working condition.

  • Capable of highly skilled, safe, and efficient operation of high-precision work in tight quarters in all weather conditions.

B. Perform Routine Equipment Maintenance

  • Inspects, equipment and performs routine maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include checking fluid levels, air pressures, replacing belts and fluids, greasing equipment, and washing/cleaning equipment and vehicles.

  • Reports faulty or necessary maintenance of equipment to supervisor.

C. Performs Manual Labor

  • Repairs and maintains water, sanitary-sewer, and reclaimed water infrastructure such as service lines and mains, fire hydrants, meters, water valves, manholes, lift station and booster station components.

  • Locates water, reclaimed water, and sanitary-sewer infrastructure.

  • Performs maintenance activities such as cleaning and flushing of water, reclaimed water and sanitary sewer lines.

  • Installs water, reclaimed water, and sanitary-sewer taps.

  • Uses variety of power and hand tools, including chain saw, pruner, line trimmer, shovel, rake, pitchfork, broom, and radio communications equipment.

D. Performs Recordkeeping or Other Administrative asks

  • Receives, documents, reviews, and files various electronic forms, reports, work orders, maps, and/or other documentation as appropriate or assigned.

III. Other Job Duties

Performs other job duties as assigned, including:

  • May place safety cones and signs and flag traffic.

  • May instruct others in equipment use.

  • Provides assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.

  • Maintains responsibility for always keeping work area in a clean and safe operating condition.

IV. Primary Job Challenges

Primary challenge of this position includes performing as part of the Department's service and repair team maintaining all system components in operable condition.

  • Job Content Knowledge: Has knowledge of the activities, practices, and methods of the City. Is highly skilled in operating vehicles and equipment utilized within the Department in the performance of job tasks. Is knowledgeable in the maintenance of job-related equipment. Understands how to safely use required tools and supplies. Has the ability to comprehend, understand, and follow work orders assigned by supervisor.

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. In decision making, some choices are known while others may need to be identified. Some reliance on precedent. Ability to interpret a variety of complex instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Teamwork: Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a High School Diploma or GED, plus three years of driving experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses:

Valid TN Driver License - CDL - A or B; with air-brake endorsement.
