Guided by the agency's mission "To reduce recidivism among those we touch," the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is looking for a dedicated security-minded equipment operator professional to assume the responsibilities of a Equipment Operator 4.

This position works under general supervision and requires through knowledge of safety practices pertaining to and skill in operation of heaviest equipment for construction and maintenance operations in order to operate heaviest motorized equipment: Provides transportation of heavy equipment to/from Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) construction sites.

Job Duties:

  • Transports OPI products from institutional shops to other OPI shops and Central Distribution Center (CDC) warehouse

  • Transports livestock and grain to/from stockyards and grain elevators as directed

  • Operates gasoline or diesel powered vehicles (e.g., tractor trailers, heavy equipment and straight trucks) to pick up and deliver products or materials in liquid, lose or packaged form throughout the state of Ohio

  • Inspects vehicles for defects before and after trips

  • Maintains pre-arranged time schedules and reports unnecessary time delays to supervisors immediately

  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicles assigned; ensures vehicle is free of litter and dirt at the end of each shift

  • Operates any combination of heaviest types of construction equipment (e.g., 10 ton backhoe, 35 ton wheeled hydraulic boom, 10 ton crawler, 18 ton dozer, heavy crawler & truck mounted excavator, gradall 44,000 pounds and over, tractor trailer with gross vehicle weight of 36,500 pounds or more, fire plow, truck trailer over 50,000 pounds), to excavate and grade ditches, contain wildfires, construct and maintain roads and bridges, dig channels, load and/or haul heavy equipment and materials, clean waterways and/or perform similar operations

  • Operates any or all equipment operated by lower-level equipment operators as needed within OPI; operates Demolition equipment with 1,200 pound hammer and 90,000 lb. diesel track hoe & front loader to excavate and grade ditches, dig channels, load heavy materials, and deconstruct old similar operations

  • Loads and unloads vehicles as necessary

  • Supervises inmates to load and unload trucks

  • Checks for correct quantities and condition of livestock/merchandise against computer generated, manual and handwritten receiving and delivery receipts; pads, stacks and secures items in position to prevent damage in transit

  • Ensures prompt delivery by following a pre-arranged delivery schedule

  • Deals with customers in a courteous and professional manner

  • Attends meetings, trainings and conferences

  • May give presentations and conduct training

  • Responds both verbally and in writing to questions and concerns

Formal education in arithmetic to include fractions, decimals & percentages & to read, write & speak common English vocabulary; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in operation of heavy construction equipment (e.g., 10 ton crawler, large cranes, 10 ton backhoe, 18 ton dozer, over 44,000 pound gradall, truck mounted excavator) & related safety practices; valid commercial driver's license; in addition, for positions in Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry Wildfire Program only, must successfully complete Basic Firefighter Introduction to Fire Behavior Course (S-130/S-190). -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

This position works under general supervision and requires considerable knowledge of safety practices associated with and skill in operation of heavy motorized equipment Job Duties: * Operates gasoline or diesel powered vehicles(tractor trailers and straight trucks) to pick up and deliver, finished goods, milk, meat and materials in liquid, loose or packaged form throughout the state of Ohio * Makes daily inspection of vehicle for defects before and after trips * Maintains pre-arranged time schedule and reports excessive time delays immediately to supervisor * Maintains cleanliness of vehicle assigned (daily or routine) and is free of litter and dirt at the end of each shift * Folds and stores pads and straps in designated area(s) and returns all empty skids to storage at the end of each shift * Loads and unloads vehicles by hand or by use of hand truck or dolly * Checks for correct items, quantities and condition of product packaging against computer generated and handwritten receiving and delivery receipts * Pads, stacks and secures products to prevent damages while in transit * Ensures prompt delivery by following pre-arranged delivery schedule * Delivers, and stacks or assembles products on customer's premises, separates documents and obtains receipt the products were delivered and damaged free * Deals with customer in courteous and friendly manner * Operates other related material handling equipment as required * Enters information into trip log and records, submits reports of various Center Distribution Center operation * Makes written notes at time of delivery in regards to shortages, damage or any other discrepancies which may occur * Submit other reports as required * Inspects loads prior to leaving dock area to ensure safety and security procedures are followed * Visually observe loading and unloading of materials and supplies at institutions to comply with DRC policies * Verify items and quantities with customer at time of delivery * Performs other duties as assigned to assist the Chief of OPI * Performs such additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor to include supervision of inmates to load and unload trucks. * Formal education in arithmetic to include fractions, decimals & percentages & reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary * 9 mos. trg. or 9 mos. exp. in operation of heavy motorized equipment (e.g., 7 ton dozer, 8-10 ton roller, concrete mixer, excavator, low-boy, vac-all or 10 ton sweeper, 10 ton tractor, 25,000 to 35,000 pound dump truck) & related safety practices * valid commercial driver's license. * Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
