This position works under general supervision and requires through knowledge of safety practices pertaining to and skill in operation of heaviest equipment for construction and maintenance operations in order to operate heaviest motorized equipment: Provides transportation of heavy equipment to/from Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) construction sites.
Transports OPI products from institutional shops to other OPI shops and Central Distribution Center (CDC) warehouse
Transports livestock and grain to/from stockyards and grain elevators as directed
Operates gasoline or diesel powered vehicles (e.g., tractor trailers, heavy equipment and straight trucks) to pick up and deliver products or materials in liquid, lose or packaged form throughout the state of Ohio
Inspects vehicles for defects before and after trips
Maintains pre-arranged time schedules and reports unnecessary time delays to supervisors immediately
Maintains cleanliness of vehicles assigned; ensures vehicle is free of litter and dirt at the end of each shift
Operates any combination of heaviest types of construction equipment (e.g., 10 ton backhoe, 35 ton wheeled hydraulic boom, 10 ton crawler, 18 ton dozer, heavy crawler & truck mounted excavator, gradall 44,000 pounds and over, tractor trailer with gross vehicle weight of 36,500 pounds or more, fire plow, truck trailer over 50,000 pounds), to excavate and grade ditches, contain wildfires, construct and maintain roads and bridges, dig channels, load and/or haul heavy equipment and materials, clean waterways and/or perform similar operations
Operates any or all equipment operated by lower-level equipment operators as needed within OPI; operates Demolition equipment with 1,200 pound hammer and 90,000 lb. diesel track hoe & front loader to excavate and grade ditches, dig channels, load heavy materials, and deconstruct old similar operations
Loads and unloads vehicles as necessary
Supervises inmates to load and unload trucks
Checks for correct quantities and condition of livestock/merchandise against computer generated, manual and handwritten receiving and delivery receipts; pads, stacks and secures items in position to prevent damage in transit
Ensures prompt delivery by following a pre-arranged delivery schedule
Deals with customers in a courteous and professional manner
Attends meetings, trainings and conferences
May give presentations and conduct training
Responds both verbally and in writing to questions and concerns
Formal education in arithmetic to include fractions, decimals & percentages & to read, write & speak common English vocabulary; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in operation of heavy construction equipment (e.g., 10 ton crawler, large cranes, 10 ton backhoe, 18 ton dozer, over 44,000 pound gradall, truck mounted excavator) & related safety practices; valid commercial driver's license; in addition, for positions in Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry Wildfire Program only, must successfully complete Basic Firefighter Introduction to Fire Behavior Course (S-130/S-190). -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
