GENERAL DESCRIPTIONUnder general supervision to perform a variety of skilled work in the repair, overhaul, and preventive maintenance of a variety of vehicular and other mechanical equipment.SUPERVISION EXERCISEDFleet Equipment Mechanic Trainee/I/II positions exercise no supervision.Fleet Equipment Mechanic III may exercise limited supervision as outlined by the supervisor.IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIESInspect, repair, and perform diagnostic checks and troubleshooting techniques on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles including landscaping, and construction equipment.Overhaul and/or repair components such as clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, universal joints, air conditioning, motor ignitions, carburetors, and electrical and hydraulic systems vehicles such as trucks, trailers, street sweepers, tractors, skid loaders, backhoes, and other equipment as needed.Adjust and replace necessary units and parts including valves, pistons, brakes, hoses, body parts, switches, hydraulic cylinders, engine parts, and fuel and exhaust components.Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs in Fleet Maintenance software.Provide Parts staff with complete and accurate information when ordering repair parts.Maintain personal and common work areas according to established safety standards.Perform Mount/dismount, rotate and balance tires.Periodically operate or test drive heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, medium and light vehicles as well as a wrecker truck. Operation of vehicles is required for diagnosis and verification of repair.Replace logos, decals, and placards as needed.OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIESPerform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of:Methods and procedures, tools, equipment, and materials used in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.Applicable safety standards for vehicles, equipment, and work areas.Safe driving principles and practices.Full range of automotive, diesel, and equipment mechanics.Skill to:Operate a variety of vehiclesOperate equipment and tools including hydraulic jack, air jack, drill press, crane truck, dozer, backhoe, tractor, refuse truck, car, pick-up, and wrecker.Ability to:Follow oral and written instructions.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.Follow and embrace the City of Abilene Core Values - Respect, Integrity, Service Above Self, and Excellence in All We Do.Perform as a team member in a manner that accomplishes the Division's mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.Equipment Mechanic IIILead, manage, and perform as a team member in a manner that accomplishes the Division's mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.Experience and Training Guidelines:For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:Experience:Equipment Mechanic Trainee, I - This is an entry-level position. At least 18 months of related experience is preferred.Equipment Mechanic II - Three (3) years of experience equivalent to that of an Equipment Mechanic I for the City of Abilene is required.Equipment Mechanic III - Five (5) years of experience equivalent to that of an Equipment Mechanic II or a full journey level Equipment Mechanic is required.Work requires considerable independent judgment in selecting work methods and procedures.Education/Training:A high school diploma or a GED is required.Equipment Mechanic II - Depending upon assigned location within Fleet Maintenance, one or more of the following is required:Completion of training courses leading to any of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification Tests. Courses recommended, but are not limited to: Automobile & Light Truck Certification Tests (A1 - A9) or Heavy Duty Trucks Certification Tests (T1 - T8).*
  • Factory training directly related to City owned equipment can be used to complete the Educational and Testing requirement.Equipment Mechanic III - Completion of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification Tests related to appropriate mechanical field within Fleet Maintenance is required.*
  • For example: Automobile Test A1-A9 for light vehicle mechanics or Medium and Heavy Truck Test T1-T8 for heavy truck or equipment mechanics. Similar level of achievement in OEM (Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Cummins, Autocar, Freightliner, and Caterpillar) coursework may be substituted for ASE Test completion. Work performed must be consistent with industry standards and benchmarks.License or Certificate:Equipment Mechanic TraineeA valid Texas Class B CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment is required.Equipment Mechanic I, II, IIIA valid Texas Class B CDL driver's license is required.Special Requirements:Must provide their own tools appropriate to position level.Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confined workspaces, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.Must travel to different sites.Considered Essential Personnel in the event of City Offices closure and reports to work as assigned by the Director.Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:With or without accommodation, the "X" indicates the overall strength demand of the position during a typical workday:___ Sedentary - lifting of no more than 10 pounds___ Light - lifting no more than 20 pounds; carrying up to 10 pounds___ Medium - lifting no more than 50 pounds; carrying up to 25 pounds_X_ Heavy - lifting no more than 100 pounds; carrying up to 50 pounds___ Very Heavy - team lifting over 100 pounds; carrying more than 50 poundsPhysical Demand Codes: The following describes whether or not the position is expected to exert the physical demands listed during a typical workday as well as the overall frequency of the task:Codes for how often:N = NoE = Extensive (100 - 70% of the time)M = Moderate (60 - 30% of the time)I = Infrequent (20 - 10% of the time)A = Almost Never (
