JOIN OUR TEAM! Chicago Equine Medical Center is a state-of-the-art Equine veterinary and surgery facility in Wauconda, Illinois. We are one of the few veterinary hospitals in North America committed to the health and soundness of sport and pleasure horses. Chicago Equine is comprised of highly trained veterinarians and staff dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating equine injuries and illnesses.

We are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide specialized services, routine and critical care.

The veterinary assistant provides support to the veterinarians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, organizing ambulatory vehicles, restraining and handling patients, and clerical and administrative work. They also support the veterinarians in providing care to hospitalized patients which can require overnight and second shift schedules.

Interested candidates should have strong equine handling and/or veterinary assistant or technician experience, and the ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Tasks include:

  • Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by the veterinarian; maintain accurate medical records.

  • Jogging and restraining horses for physical and soundness exams

  • Draw blood and assist veterinarian with running labs at the hospital and through outside laboratories

  • Operate and maintain hospital equipment including digital x-ray, portable ultrasound, endoscope, fluid pump, shockwave, bloodwork machines, etc. Notify supervisor if equipment is broken or not working correctly.

  • Calculate and administer medications, maintain proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.

  • Create and follow a treatment plan based on veterinarian instructions; recognize and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors.

  • Provide ambulatory support to veterinarians including truck inventory, handling horses, scrubbing for injections, setting up equipment, maintaining empathy and professionalism during high stress situations

  • Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital each day; clean equipment and facilities using chemicals and supplies; ensure the safe use of chemicals; complete laundry.

  • Other duties may be assigned if working in a specialty area (i.e., surgery, ICU, bone scan, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education, and/or experience.

  • Ability to follow directions with and without supervision and ask questions when tasks are unclear

  • Able to perform moderately physically demanding work, that requires a lot of lifting (up to 50 pounds) and constant motion.

  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.

  • Knowledge of hospital procedures, treatment protocols; computer systems; and terminology used in a veterinary hospital is preferred

  • Must be flexible with scheduling and able to work some weekends and holidays. Let us know if you like night shifts!

Salary: From $17.00 per hour
