Job Description

South Shore Equine Clinic offers a 6 month and a 12 month internship program to graduates of accredited veterinary schools that are eligible for a MA license. The goal of this internship is to allow the intern to become a qualified ambulatory associate, as well as a qualified diagnostician familiar with all aspects of diagnostics and treatment options.

The 6 month internship starts in January, and the 12 month internship starts in June each year. January

  • April is full of reproduction, foaling, and early spring wellness appointments, along with typical schedules as listed below.

Case load: Performance horse evaluations

  • H/J, eventing, and dressage show horse, Standardbred racehorses, western pleasure, emphasis on diagnostics and therapeutic options. Lameness work-ups, imaging (Dr, Ultrasound, MRI), shockwave, Tenex procedures, PRP, IRAP, Arthramid, and conventional intra-articular care.

    Internal medicine caseload includes referrals as well as ophthalmic and medical colic cases; preventative care and dentistry; no colic surgery performed. General ambulatory/emergencies seen weekly and as needed.

Types of cases: 40% performance horse evaluations, 30% Preventative care/internal medicine, 20% general ambulatory, 5-10% reproductive (seasonal), 5% emergency (no colic surgery)

Estimated breakdown of workload: Ambulatory/hospital/emergency 3-week rotations.

Monday, Wednesday & Friday - full days ambulatory, routine preventative care as well as lameness/purchase exams. Tuesday/Thursday (am) - in clinic cases and surgeries; (pm) -ambulatory. Saturday (am) - in clinic caseload and weekend ambulatory treatments.

Emergency duty requirements: Shared rotation including nights and weekends (with back-up)

Amount of supervision: Heavily mentored/supervised initially, leading to independence for emergencies and some days and/or procedures on an individual basis ultimately leading to independent days of scheduled appointments.

Prerequisite Application Process: Graduate from AVMA accredited school, passed NAVLE, eligible for a MA vet license and a valid driver's license are all requirements.
