Job Description: Epidemiologists are responsible for coordinating investigation and surveillance activities throughout Texas pertaining to COVID-19 associated deaths, variant surveillance, and special case investigations such as vaccine breakthrough cases and similar infectious diseases such as MERS and SARS.The Epidemiologist II shall:
Establish and use appropriate data collection systems and procedures.
Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data pertaining to COVID-19 associated deaths, variant surveillance, and special case investigations and similar infectious diseases such as MERS and SARS.
Collaborate with other DSHS program staff in the planning, development, and implementation of field research studies.
Create, maintain, and update case definitions, case investigation guidelines, and case investigation forms pertaining to COVID-19 associated deaths, variant, and other non-routine surveillance such as vaccine breakthrough surveillance and similar infectious diseases such as MERS and SARS surveillance and investigations.
Coordinate with novel coronavirus subject matter experts for planning, surveillance, and response.
Review patient medical charts to collect demographic, medical, and laboratory findings and exposure histories for special case investigations such as vaccine breakthrough cases and other special COVID-19 cases.
Consult with physicians, health care facilities, state and national organizations, public health officials, and the public for vaccine breakthrough, death surveillance, and other COVID-19 special case investigations and similar infectious diseases to COVID-19 such as MERS and SARS.
Coordinate interstate and intrastate communications surrounding investigations pertaining to COVID-19 associated deaths, variant surveillance, and special case investigations such as vaccine breakthrough cases.
Contribute to the development and preparation of epidemiologic investigation reports, presentations, and manuscripts pertaining to pertaining to COVID-19 associated deaths, vacant surveillance, and special case investigations such as vaccine breakthrough cases and similar infectious diseases such as MERS and SARS.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and functions of public health.
Knowledge of research planning and evaluation methods in epidemiology
Knowledge of laws and rules applicable to confidentiality and the management of protected health information.
Knowledge and experience with epidemiology.
Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and methods.
Knowledge of statistical software, especially SAS, SPSS, and/or Stata, and Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and
Skill in effective verbal communication, including preparation and presentation of complex data analysis.
Skill in identifying problems, evaluating alternatives, and negotiating and implementing solutions to data and research problems
