The Engineering Prototyping and Fabrication (EP&F) Department is seeking a Mechanical Fabrication Section Lead to join our team in Tucson, AZ. The mission of EP&F (also known as the Bike Shop) is to provide rapid, innovative engineering solutions and prototype and test equipment fabrication to demonstrate new technologies, develop new capabilities, and solve engineering problems throughout the program process. The Mechanical Fabrication Section Lead will lead a group of RMD and contract engineering technicians who produce precision prototype hardware and provide fabrication support for diverse engineering projects.
The Section Lead duties include:
Lead a team of approximately 20 section members across three locations
Conduct formal and informal performance reviews and career development discussions
Lead by example, adhering to and ensuring alignment with our Values and Behaviors
Conduct team stand-up meetings and approve section members' timecards
Manage manpower needs, including interviewing, hiring and on-boarding
Assist the lab lead in enforcing lab policy and addressing compliance issues
Advise engineers regarding producability of designs and provide general engineering and fabrication guidance and support
Identify and implement process and productivity improvements
Implement and promote Model Based fabrication and assembly capabilities
Provide oversight for machine shop operations and processes
Ensure quality documentation is current and accurate
Manage the Mechanical Fabrication operations budget
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
Requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience
Five (5) or more years of experience working in a functional leadership or program management role to include managing schedules and resources to meet assigned milestones
Five (5) or more years of experience working as a manager engineer or machinist in a machine shop or model shop environment

Desired Education, Skills and Experience:
Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
Familiarity with GibbsCAM, Mastercam or FeatureCAM software.
Working knowledge of Creo computer aided design software
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic environment
Willingness and ability to coach section members and hold critical conversations
Ability to communicate clearly and to convey innovative ideas
Familiarity with CNC, waterjet and manual fabrication practices and procedures
Ability to produce and interpret mechanical engineering drawings and sketches
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
