Job Description:

The MCLA Environmental Studies Department is engaged in several ongoing research and monitoring projects related to local ecology of the Berkshires. The Environmental Studies Research Technician will contribute to various aspects of these ongoing projects. Duties may include field data collection, preparation of field samples, maintenance of field equipment for research and classes, data entry, reviewing and devising field protocols, maintenance and preparation of natural history specimens, organization and summarization of data, and other related tasks.

Work study student may contribute to salamander monitoring, operating camera traps, radio-tracking songbirds, collecting and processing DNA and tissue samples from wild animals, capturing and sampling wild animals, and preparation of specimens for the ENVI department's natural history collection. Specific job duties will be matched to the technician's abilities and schedule. Training in field and lab techniques will be provided, as needed.

The Research Technician will be supervised by Environmental Studies Department faculty. While there is flexibility in scheduling, preference will be given to students who can make a firm weekly schedule throughout the semester.

Requirements:

  • Attentiveness to detail

  • Interest and passion for natural history and ecology

  • Ability to learn and use Microsoft Excel and Word and general computer operations

  • Comfort working independently or with faculty and student researchers in both field and lab settings

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time in field conditions which may include snow, cold weather, hot weather, and biting insects

  • Students who have completed lab science courses are preferred, but inexperienced applicants will be considered as well

  • GIS experience a plus, but not required

This position is open only to students currently enrolled at MCLA.
