Job Description:

  • Review water quality monitoring data and technical reports submitted by public water systems to assess compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to enforcement actions. Administer the Department's database by executing precise and timely data input and implementing tracking programs.

  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to public water systems on compliance with drinking water regulations, treatment processes, and sampling procedures. Conduct outreach and educational activities to raise awareness of and promote compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to coordinate enforcement and assistance efforts and share information on drinking water quality issues.

  • Must be able to effectively prioritize tasks and manage time, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in juggling multiple objectives.

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy has 3 full-time opportunities available for an Environmental Specialist II in the Drinking Water Monitoring & Compliance Section.

Environmental Specialists play a vital role in guaranteeing that the citizens of Nebraska have access to safe drinking water. This position coordinates closely with engineering and field services to support the initiatives of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in the physical sciences, natural sciences, environmental science, geology, biology, agronomy, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, hydrology, community and regional planning, or a related field. Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications: Time Management skills; Critical Thinking skills; Data Management skills including data analysis, ArcGIS, Microsoft Access experience; Organization; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Interpersonal skills; Ability to adapt and change priorities quickly.

Other: A resume with relevant information with your experience clearly listed as it pertains to this position. Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent transportation. Ability to travel occasionally overnight, Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Knowledge of: the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS), Public Water Systems, and NAC Title 179.

Skill in: public speaking, technical writing, collaboration, policy development

Ability to: conduct technical compliance tracking, respond to water quality complaints, contribute to special projects and reports, establish and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders, represent the Department at regional conferences,
