This is important technical field work, assessing water quality of various kinds and performing related work for the Water Resources Department. Work includes the performance of tasks related to compliance with Federal, State, and City regulations involving the collection and analysis of various samples obtained from City owned land, wastewater treatment plants, potable water systems, wells, bodies of water, beaches, lakes, streams and industrial waste streams using specialized equipment and computer software; operating a vehicle or motor boat to access various assignments; conducting and documenting compliance inspections of regulated businesses and industries; reporting test results; public contact work investigating citizen complaints concerning water quality problems; coordinating with appropriate Federal, State or City agencies to resolve problems; reviewing and reporting on Federal, State, or local regulations; data reduction, formatting and reporting according to established deadlines; and attendance at meetings with regulatory agencies. An employee in this class must regularly lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; will be required to perform rigorous field work that involves carrying equipment over unstable and wet terrain, slopes, aquatic environments and up and down stairs; and must be available to work a schedule that will include some weekends and holidays.

Salary: $24.45 - $37.45 Hourly

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.

  • Have some knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, procedures and proper sampling methods.

  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

  • Be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Be able to perform basic mathematical and algebraic calculations.

  • Be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends.

  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

  • Have completed a two-year vocational, technical or college program in a related field with two semesters of college chemistry with lab and one semester of college algebra, or in lieu of academic requirements, experience, training, licenses and certificates with relevance to department operations will be considered.

  • Have knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations in industrial pretreatment and field sampling operations.

  • Are skilled in the use of a personal computer to enter data and compose reports and correspondence.

  • Have strong knowledge of data processing concepts, techniques and operating principles.

  • Are able to apply chemical and mathematical theory to solve practical problems in scientific analysis and laboratory testing.
