The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency wants you to be our newest environmental specialist with the Office of Emergency Response (OER) at our Northeast District Office in Summit County.

As environmental specialist, you'll be part of the Office of Emergency Response Program responding to and investigating releases of hazardous materials or liquids into the environment. You'll identify the parties responsible and activate and oversee work of emergency response contractors to contain and remediate the release as required under state law to protect the public and environment.

You'll coordinate emergency response activities with the responsible parties and other Ohio EPA divisions, government agencies, and response organizations to ensure remedial actions are clear and completed. You'll provide technical assistance to the regulated community, consultants, and governmental officials regarding applicable federal and state laws, and regulations. As needed, you'll participate in enforcement meetings, litigation proceedings, and negotiations for Ohio EPA and the Ohio Attorney General.

  • Respond to and conduct civil investigations into the release of hazardous materials or petroleum and respond to emergency releases in accordance with the protocols of the Office of Emergency Response (OER).

  • Identify and advise responsible parties of their regulatory requirements under Ohio law concerning containment and remediation of their release to ensure protection of the public and the environment.

  • Coordinate OER activities with responsible parties, Agency divisions, other local, state, and federal agencies and response organizations in order to ensure adequate communication and compliance with applicable policy, procedure, and regulatory requirements.

  • Collect or direct the collection of environmental samples to document releases, evaluate appropriate response requirements, and assess environmental impacts.

  • Provide guidance to contractors on investigations, remediation, abatement, spill mitigation, and prevention. Provide outreach to interested groups and community officials.

NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES THE EMPLOYEE TO WEAR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, SPECIFICALLY A FULL-FACE AIR PURIFYING RESPIRATOR (APR) AND SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS (SCBA) IF POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS ARE ENCOUNTERED. THE SCBA WITH CYLINDER WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 35 LBS.

4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving geology or hydrology, engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science &/or other comparable physical or health science field, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

  • Or baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science field.

  • Or positions involved in providing financial, technical & administrative assistance for planning, design & implementation of environmental infrastructure & pollution abatement, & prevention projects, applicants must have completed undergraduate core coursework in business/public administration, public relations/marketing, political science or communications, or have 4 yrs. exp. in position involving public contact to explain policies, procedures & programs of agency, writing of promotional &/or explanatory publications & materials, budgeting, contract administration & working with others on team projects. Note: For all positions engaged in field work, applicants must be able to provide own transportation. New employees in EPA's solid waste program, excluding those in the solid waste planning unit, must obtain a sanitarian-in-training certificate during their probationary period.
