By joining the Division of Waste Management as an Environmental Scientist Consultant II in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to serve as a technical, scientific advisor to the Director of the Division of Waste Management (DWM). On behalf of the director, independently staffs, directs, or manages scientific projects and programs.
Holders of the Environmental Scientist Consultant II position will complete tasks such as:
Serve as project coordinator/manager and represents the division director on complex environmental projects in DWM.
Serve as a scientific advisor to the director, and as a technical authority on multiple program and policy issues, involving complex or sensitive environmental problems with significant program impact.
Reviews, develops & analyzes state and federal laws and regulations that affect DWM programs. Recommends revisions to statutes and regulations.
Develops guidelines & procedures, reviews & analyzes complex scientific data. Represents the Division before federal & state agencies, the legislature, the scientific community, and the public.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
Experience managing complex environmental projects involving soil and groundwater remediation.
Experience reviewing and assessing technical documents.
Excellent planning, time management, verbal, and organizational skills.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Nine years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
