Jacobs Coastal Scientist Careers

Our Coastal Scientist jobs are your opportunity to help monitor and restore coastal Louisiana wetlands. Each day, you will work on ecological monitoring projects conducting field sampling and data analysis. You should be a self-motivated, team-focused individual with a BS degree in environmental science; have 0-3 years of experience performing environmental field work preferably as a field biologist, wetland ecologist, or botanist; and have a desire to grow personally as well as professionally with each Coastal Scientist job.

Our Coastal Scientists:

  • Conduct environmental sampling, evaluate and analyze data, and assist with technical report writing on the Coastwide Reference Monitoring Systems program

  • Collect scientific data including hydrologic (using continuous recorders), wetland surface elevation and accretion (via RSET/feldspar techniques), and wetland vegetation composition and cover data

  • Work in an effective team environment, learning and taking instruction from mid and senior staff

  • Work on coastal restoration projects requiring heavy physical exertion in a variety of difficult field conditions

  • Are familiar with wetland plants and biological data collection

  • Use their knowledge in the safe operation of boats and airboats

  • Spend up to 90% of time working in the field

  • Share work experiences in a positive work environment where talents are valued

Jacobs will not sponsor an employment visa to fill this position.

  • BS or MS degree in natural sciences from a US accredited college or university is required

  • Candidate MUST be familiar with coastal wetlands - must have lived (or worked on projects) on the coast.

  • Louisiana experience is preferred.

  • MUST be comfortable working in all types of boats.

  • Experience with Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Safety experience required.

  • Must be capable of heavy physical exertion in a variety of difficult field conditions.

  • Must be able to travel 1-4 nights per month as needed

The successful candidate will have experience managing/coordinating environmental projects, supervising/conducting environmental field work and writing environmental technical reports. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: * Management of environmental projects * Supervision or performance of various field tasks, such as contractor oversight, field screening, and sample collection. * Preparing technical reports. * Communicating and interacting effectively and successfully with fellow AECOM employees, contractors, and clients. * Working both outdoors at project sites and in an office environment. * Works independently with a minimal to moderate level of guidance * Provides regular updates to manager on project status * May assist more junior staff members with aspects of their job or may coordinate activities of a small team * Specialist in analytical, technical or operational skills, where and specialized expertise was typically developed through a combination of job-related training and on-the-job experience. * Quality control of tasks or small segments of project produced, as well as products of technical and administrative staff assigned tasks Minimum Requirements * BA/BS degree in geology, environmental science or other related discipline (e.g., geophysics, hydrogeology, geochemistry, environmental geology, engineering geology, environmental engineering). OR AA/AS in the aforementioned disciplines and 8 years of relevant experience * 6+ years of relevant experience in contaminated sites investigation and remediation. * Valid driver's license Preferred Qualifications * 10+ years of relevant experience in contaminated sites investigation and remediation. * Tolerance for work in outdoor environments in a range of weather conditions and be medically fit for wearing a respirator. * Excellent organization skills and attention to detail. * Proficiency in standard office suite software applications. * Ability to demonstrate professional demeanor in written and verbal communications with clients, regulatory officials, and fellow employees. * Experience working on environmental projects on heavy industrial sites such as chemical plants. * Experience working for both industrial companies and consulting companies is a plus. * Experience managing contractors, subcontractors, and junior staff. * Experience with coordinating, supervision, and documenting remedial excavations. * General knowledge of basic geologic principles and the environmental sciences. * Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and safely drive a full-size pickup truck. * Ability to maintain a valid driver's license. * Ability to travel, including extended travel, when necessary less than 25%. * Ability to write and to convey complex thoughts and ideas in a clear, concise manner.
