Our Natural Resources and Permitting Team is seeking an Environmental Scientist Intern - Summer 2024 to work out of our Buffalo, NY office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2024 or later.

Your Impact

  • General planning support, including data collection, research, and documentation.

  • Assist in writing of technical reports and public-facing materials.

  • Contribute to the development of wetland delineation and assessment reports, biological assessments, mitigation/restoration site design and critical area assessment and permitting.

  • Support field work/research, alternatives screening analyses, environmental assessments, and community outreach for public clients.

  • Complete training on assigned tasks.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

  • Flexible to work outside normal business hours as required; may include weekend and nighttime work

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

  • Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Environmental Science, or related, Undergraduate program.

  • Knowledge or experience with environmental planning, permitting, or scientific assessments.

  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.

  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.

  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Environmental Science, or related, Masters Degree or PhD program.

  • Prior internship experience, leadership experience, or relevant coursework.

  • Experience with GPS data collection and GIS analysis.

  • Practical scientific expertise and knowledge of ecology, biology, and permitting for terrestrial (solar/wind/transmission) and/or in-water projects (offshore wind/port/waterfront/marine terminals).

  • Knowledge or experience in the following: NYS 94-c Large Scale Renewables, NYS Article VII, NYS State Environmental Quality Review Act, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, and Clean Water Act.

Compensation:

Expected Salary: $19.13 - $30.00 per hour

WSP USA is providing the compensation range and general description of other compensation and benefits that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position based on the successful applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant's sex or other status protected by local, state, or federal law.
