The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a technical consultant to management on industrial hygiene and environmental evaluations of the work environment. Incumbent works independently or within a team to conduct health hazard evaluations, and promote effective occupational health and safety practices throughout Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Plans, organizes and conducts conventional studies and surveys. Contacts appropriate personnel to be surveyed prior to the survey to explain technical requirements or request support.
Collect samples and performs complex occupational environmental health studies. Assists in planning and conducting sampling using various instrumentation and equipment.
Reviews and evaluates new construction plans.
On-the-job training for Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight. Assists higher-graded specialist with on-the-job training for new/untrained civilian and military personnel within the Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight.
Works to achieve and support quality improvement in all products and services.
Evaluates health and environmental hazards associated with all Air Force and Army Operations.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade of GS-08 for External Employees & GS-07 for Internal Employees Specialized experience includes identifying, preventing, or eliminating health hazards in one or more areas of environmental sanitation. Such experience must have provided a practical knowledge of environmental health hazards, survey techniques, and control and eradication methods, and may have been gained in work such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker.
EDUCATION: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. This education was obtained in an accredited college or university. This degree must be directly related to the work of the position, such as Masters of Science/Public Health in Environmental Health and such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.
NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Applicants must have served at least 52 weeks at (GS-08 for Externals) and (GS-07 for Internal) or higher grade (or equivalent in an alternate pay system) within the Federal Civil Service to be considered for referral. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1.Knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, practices, and principles. Knowledge and ability to recognize workplace and environmental factors and stresses associated with multifaceted work operations.
2.Knowledge and ability to use a wide range of industrial hygiene sampling techniques and instrumentation. Knowledge of all types of industrial hygiene measuring and sampling instruments and equipment and skill in their field calibration and use.
3.Knowledge and ability to conduct air sampling evaluations and assess the associate hazards.
4.Knowledge required to recommend control measures; Ability to plan and execute complex, multi-faceted projects.
5.Ability to communicate orally and in writing, prepare correspondence, briefings, and recurring and special reports regarding industrial hygiene related issues. Ability to plan, organizes, and meets deadlines.
6.Knowledge of AFMS Customer Satisfaction Priorities and skill in demonstrating sensitivity and responsiveness to the needs and requirements of customers, employees, supervisors, and peers.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
