Job Duties

The Office of Drinking Water is seeking an Environmental Health Technical Specialist for the Danville Field Office. The Danville Field Office currently serves the counties of Amelia, Appomattox, Bedford, Brunswick, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward, and the Cities of Lynchburg, Danville, and Martinsville. This is an exciting opportunity to work in an office filled with passionate public health professionals dedicated to ensuring Virginians are provided with safe and reliable drinking water.

Under Section 32.1-167-176 of the Code of Virginia and the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the Department of Health (VDH) is required to provide safe drinking water regulations. These functions are initiated and monitored by the Environmental Health Technical Specialist for the field office.

Critical duties of this position include: (1)Managing the non-community groundwater and consecutive system surveillance and operations programs in the field office including inspections of non-community waterworks and reviewing inspection reports of office EHSS inspectors, this position will assist in oversight of groundwater and consecutive waterworks throughout the field office. In addition, the position will be the lead office staff in the onboarding of found systems and oversight of seasonal system compliance and Total Coliform compliance. (2)Interpreting federal and state regulations applicable to waterworks owners and operators, (3)providing guidance to owners and operators to ensure they achieve compliance with health and safety standards, (4)providing assistance to help waterworks return to compliance in cases where they violate the standards, (5)training operators in the operation and maintenance of waterworks, and (7)providing information about drinking water quality to the general public. This position also assists in the overall administration and management of the field office.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Working knowledge of biology, microbiology, chemistry, and math

2.Working knowledge of technology associated with provision of drinking water

3.Ability to use computers for word processing and data management

4.Ability to communicate in English in writing, orally, interpersonally, and before groups and public meetings

5.Ability to interpret regulations and technical documents

6.Working knowledge of waterworks inspections and inspection report review

Additional Considerations

1.Experience conducting sanitary surveys or environmental risk assessments.

2.Knowledge of SDWA and Virginia Waterworks Regulations.

3.Ability to manage a regulatory program.

4.Knowledge of waterworks operation.
