ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY SPECIALIST

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist position supports the field safety team, clubs and distribution centers, focused primarily on identifying and predicting incident trends through data analytics. This role partners cross functionally to enhance environmental, health & safety programs and implement solutions to create awareness, improve workplace safety, and ensure regulatory compliance.

The Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist works with regulatory agencies to respond to inspections and spills, as well as identifies ways to comply with changing and emerging regulations. This role develops and generates reports, supports accident investigations, manages spills and proactively identifies ways to minimize liability to the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Remain current in all Environmental, Health & Safety technical skills, including, spill clean-up methodologies, accident investigation and root cause analysis.

  • Analyze safety rates and data analytics to predict incident trends and identify areas for improvement.

  • Publish monthly reports and dashboards to communicate results and drive improvement.

  • Collaborate with the field safety team on developing strategies to improve safety, assess high risk areas, address incidents and maintain a safe environment for team members and members.

  • Develop and execute Environmental, Health & Safety programs and update as necessary to ensure they meet or exceed industry standards. Examples include life safety and emergency preparedness, recordkeeping, fire safety, powered industrial trucks, machine guarding, tire bay safety, hazardous waste management and personal protective equipment.

  • Assist in meeting all government agency requirements (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT, FDA & USDA); respond to regulatory inspections, investigations and recalls; and work with vendors and internal business partners to supply the clubs with cost effective environmental equipment, signage and programs to promote execution of safety practices and regulatory compliance.

  • Respond and provide 24-hour support and direction for all environmental spills, manage the emergency response program, and oversee corporate Tier II reporting, OSHA recordkeeping and regulatory reporting necessary to support the organization.

  • Develop partnerships with all home office teams, including Operations, Human Resources, Asset Protection, Merchandizing, Logistics and Facilities to support the clubs.

  • Support various company initiatives and strategic priorities by providing guidance based on industry best practices as they apply to Environmental, Health & Safety.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science or in any Natural Science.

  • 2+ years of experience in an environmental compliance or safety capacity, preferably in the manufacturing or retail industry.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations and industry best practices related to Environmental, Health & Safety.

  • In-depth ability to analyze data, identify trends and provide recommendations to reduce incident rates.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Detailed oriented and able to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

  • Occasional overnight travel required.

In collaboration with public and private entities, DLS protects workers by means of education and training, workplace safety and health consultation and assessment, occupational injury and illness data collection and analysis, and consistent and responsible administration and enforcement of its statutes and regulations. DLS carries out its objectives in a manner that supports employers and strengthens the Commonwealth's communities and economy. WSHP Mission The goal of the Workplace Safety and Health Program (WSHP) is to prevent workplace injury and illness of public sector workers. This program operates equivalent to an OSHA State Plan to prevent injuries and promote compliance with OSHA standards, in accordance with 454 CMR 25. General Statement of Job Duties The Department of Labor Standards is looking for an experienced industrial hygienist to join the Workplace Safety and Health Program. Candidate must have experience applying OSHA regulations in construction, wastewater treatment, hazardous waste, or healthcare. Candidate must be able to work independently on a caseload of multiple projects. Inspectors are assigned a list of cases to complete, and may also be dispatched same-day to respond to an industrial accident or fatality. Detailed Summary of Duties and Responsibilities * Conducts accident investigations such as amputation and electric shock in a variety of public sector settings, including wastewater treatment plants, public works highway departments, fire departments, correctional facilities and state operated healthcare and social service facilities. * Conducts industrial hygiene inspections for chemical exposure, noise, biohazards, occupational asthma, and confined spaces. This role does not conduct inspections for mold or indoor air quality. * Collects air and wipe samples, and interprets laboratory analysis reports for noise, silica, PCBs, metals, cyanide and other hazmat materials. * Evaluates lab safety procedures in K-12, university, and BSL2 settings. * Evaluates workplace violence incidents in K-12, corrections, and residential social service settings. * Assists multi-story state buildings with emergency action planning. * Develops written programs for respiratory protection, lockout tagout, confined spaces and medical surveillance. * Applies risk management concepts towards safety program management and injury and illness prevention. * Prepares documentation and issues Civil Citations, Written Warnings, and Technical Reports to require corrective action for injury prevention and compliance with OSHA standards. * Tracks employer responses to confirm that corrective actions have been abated. * Maintains documentation for a complete inspection case file for compliance with DLS and OSHA State Plan requirements. * Applies advanced knowledge of safety and health regulations and standards, including OSHA General Industry, OSHA Construction, NFPA, ANSI, and ACGIH. Researches and shares technical information with co-workers. * Works independently and communicates effectively in oral expression and in writing. Proficient use of Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook and Excel. * Travel to inspection sites may be required on short notice to begin an inspection after the agency receives notification of an injury. First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in safety engineering, industrial hygiene, inspection or investigatory work in connection with occupational safety/health standards, in the regulation of occupational safety/health or in enforcement of occupational health laws, rules, regulations and standards, of which (B) one (1) year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below. Extensive travel is required; incumbents must have access to a properly inspected, registered and insured personal automobile and must possess a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment. Based on assignment Applicants must pass an annual medical evaluation to certify their ability to wear respiratory or other breathing apparatus. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain certification from the EPA, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and other agencies as necessary to perform duties as assigned. SUBSTITUTIONS: I. An Associate's degree with a major in building construction, mechanical technology, industrial hygiene, industrial management, industrial technology, sanitation/public health inspection, or engineering may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience. II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, industrial hygiene, safety science, construction management, industrial management, or a related scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology or the like, may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience. III. A Graduate degree with a major in engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, industrial management, or a related scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology or the like may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience. IV. Completion of an apprentice training program approved by the Massachusetts Division of Apprentice Standards in a construction trade may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.
