Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide technical assistance, training, and evaluation to local health departments.

  • Assist with recalls and food emergencies.

  • Develop and recommend program changes based upon legislative or regulatory changes, new technologies, problem identification, or best practices from other jurisdictions.

  • Correspond in writing and by phone with local health department staff, general public and other agencies.

  • Research relevant literature such as federal guidance, the Retail Food Code, regulations from other states, and other documents to ensure the program stays up to date with current recommendations, new technologies, and best practices.

  • Assist with the updating of program regulations.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good organization skills to handle several projects at once.

  • Ability to understand and interpret regulations.

  • Good attention to detail.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree with a minor or twenty-four (24) semester hours in environmental health, biological health or physical science.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have three years of professional regulatory experience or experience in health administration, health service occupation, milk/food laboratory quality control or milk/food industry.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be registered as an Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian under the provisions of KRS 223 within twelve (12) months of appointment and maintain this registration for the length of employment in this job title.

Working Conditions

Incumbents working in this job title will require frequent traveling to conduct inspections.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
