Position Summary:

The primary focus of the Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will be to support the evolution and implementation of Bristol-Myers Squibb Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability Standards for the Bristol-Myers Squibb San Diego Research and Early Development locations. The EHS Specialist will work as part of a team to manage all required Work Practices, Standard Operating Procedures, documentation, training, inspection records, communications, and performance metrics to ensure best practices and compliance with all relevant state and federal regulations and Bristol-Myers Squibb Global EHSS Standards.

The purpose of this position is to ensure worker safety, environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and adherence to BMS global standards at the BMS San Diego Research and Early Development sites by working as part of the Environmental, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, safety, medical surveillance and sustainability laws, regulations, codes, rules, and consensus guides.

  • Champion key EHSS initiatives such as My Green Labs Program, Risk Assessments, Industrial Hygiene Program Management, Ergonomics, Contractor Safety, Chemical Hygiene, and Biosafety programs

  • EHSS systems and database administration

  • Leverage the BMS EHSS Management System Platform to manage BMS Sustainability initiatives, inspections, Facility Self-Assessments, Industrial Hygiene, and Corrective Actions

  • Manage the EHSS training process for the site. Including collaboratively collaborating with trainers to develop new and revised training, accurately assigning training based on guidelines, and supporting training records requests related training for the site.

  • EHSS laboratories Inspections coordination - work alongside areas inspectors and room owners to ensure internal inspections are completed and observations addressed on time.

  • Assist in the maintenance of San Diego EHSS Standard Operating Procedures, site Work Instructions, and plans to help ensure continued improvement of facility and organization EHSS performance.

  • BMS EHSS Standards Integration work - assist in deployment of documentation to align existing programs with Bristol-Myers Squibb Environmental, Health, Safety, and Sustainability requirements.

  • Support implementation of incident and near miss reporting and investigation process, ensures communication to appropriate management, and/or implementation of necessary preventive measures.

  • Assist with the management of EHSS PPE deployment programs such as safety footwear and prescriptions safety glasses.

  • Schedule and coordinate Ergonomic Assessments as needed for employees. Manage any required follow up equipment or tools to ensure end customer satisfaction.

  • Provide and deploy EHSS communications using existing media display tools to enhance EHSS program effectiveness.

  • Function as liaison with Facilities, Lab Services, and Research departments to facilitate design and implementation of site projects with EHSS impacts.

  • Create and deploy EHSS surveys to gauge EHSS program effectiveness.

  • Assist in tracking and coordination of EHSS permit renewals, regulatory deadlines, training requirements and other internal compliance timelines.

  • Assist in the administration of contractor safety program and associated Work Permits, Job Hazard Analysis, and any required documentation.

  • Other - Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations and procedures that apply to the biotech industry is necessary.

  • Working knowledge and application of industrial hygiene monitoring, compound banding, and environmental media.

  • Prefer certification as Industrial Hygienist (CIH) through an accredited organization or in the process to obtain certification.

  • Working knowledge of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

  • Manage multiple projects/tasks, effectively prioritize tasks, communication skills and timely closure of assignments.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.

  • SharePoint, SuccessFactors, and Veeva Vault experience a plus

  • Technical writing experience a plus

  • Strong in database management

  • Exceptional organizational skills

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and customer service skills

  • Strong ability to interact positively with diverse colleagues and departments daily.

  • Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, by using effective and appropriate judgment.

  • Rigorous dedication to detail required to sustain an effective safety program.

  • Bachelor's degree in safety or environmental sciences related field, chemistry, biology, or closely related scientific field with 2-5 years of industry experience, preferably within a laboratory setting.

  • Environmental Health and Safety / Industrial Hygiene certifications or path to obtaining certifications a plus

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $70,000 - $87,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed.

Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
