Big Ass Fans is in search of an Environment, Health, and Safety Manager who will be responsible for the administration, implementation, and enforcement of BAF safety policies!


  • Ensure compliance with regulations enforced through OSHA, EPA, DOT and all other state and federal laws / regulations pertaining to safety and the environment

  • Provide support and maintain documentation of all incident / accident investigations

  • Develop, implement and execute training programs for safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with all company and governmental requirements; maintain supporting documentation

  • Gather and report data on safety and environmental performance, compliance, expenses and incidents; keep site managers apprised of status, trends and progress compared to goals

  • Organize, lead and participate in activities that promote employee ownership in the safety & environmental programs such as safety committees, emergency response teams, first responder meetings, accident investigation committees, etc.

  • Manage safety incentive programs

  • Participate in the review of new operations, processes and procedures and updates changes to existing procedures

  • Ensure maintenance and easy access to current safety resources for each location

  • Meet all required federal, state and city permitting / reporting requirements to ensure operational compliance

  • Serve as point of contact for all inquiries, inspections and/or audits by federal, state and/or city regulatory agencies including but not limited to OSHA, EPA, DOT, Health Department, Fire Department, etc.

  • Maintain safety and environmental files in a manner that they are readily available for inspection by regulating agencies

  • Has the authority to stop the line/process for any occupational health & safety, environmental and health-related concerns

  • Maintain and assist in managing budgets concerning safety, environment and health initiatives

  • Familiar with and able to manage the safety of warehouses, construction teams, mobile equipment, as well as production environments


  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, health and/or environmental management or related engineering/scientific field preferred.

  • 3-5 years safety experience preferred.

  • Candidate must be familiar with current and proposed federal, state, and local safety and health regulations

  • Must be knowledgeable of current and proposed personal protective equipment requirements

  • Must have competency in development of written procedures and instructions. Strong written and oral communication skills are necessary

  • Able to make objective evaluations of safety problems and implement abatement methods

  • Able to recognize hazards and develop proper corrective action

  • Physically and mentally fit to complete audits/investigations as necessary

  • Broad knowledge of OSHA, DOT & EPA compliance and workers' compensation administration

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees, contractor's, federal, state & city regulators and insurance carriers

  • Previous multi-site responsibilities

  • Strong interpersonal, decision-making and influence skills a must

  • Excellent verbal / written communication skills and strong organization skills

  • Must be self-motivated with ability to manage multiple competing priorities

Job Summary / Purpose The Program Manager for Patient Safety plays a prominent role in maintaining the strategic direction of the patient safety program and developing a workplace culture where safety is the utmost priority. The Program Manager works in collaboration with employee and environmental safety. The Program Manager develops the core components of the Healthcare Performance Improvement (HPI) Safety First Model and in partnership with Quality-Risk Management and Operational leaders, assumes responsibility for the implementation and subsequent monitoring of the results. The Program Manager provides education and training on safety behaviors and techniques that are proven to prevent errors and promote efficient and effective processes. The Program Manager utilizes data to proactively identify and address any patient issues to keep patients protected from unintended harm. The position has responsibility in coordinating and overseeing the development of comprehensive patient safety improvement initiatives to reduce healthcare errors and healthcare incidents. All leading to a safety culture that encourages communication of safety concerns and unsafe conditions. Essential Key Job Responsibilities * Apply the science of safety and human factors as care practices and processes are implemented. * Support reduction of medical errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. * Recommend improvement strategies regarding issues identified and provide assistance for action plan implementation. * Provide leadership to facility-based SafetyFirst culture transformation efforts. * Provide leadership to facility-based safety huddles across the system and facilitate communication and knowledge transfer regarding patient and employee safety issues. * Establish an effective internal communication plan to promptly notify key administrative and leadership stakeholders when an event is identified. * Monitor, report and improve patient and employee safety performance. * Partner with facility Risk Management and Quality to conduct investigations for reports that require interdepartmental and/or in depth investigations. * Display knowledge and comply with National Patient Safety Goals, Patient Safety Systems Standard and other regulatory guidelines. * Stimulate and direct cultural transformation of Patient Safety across CHI Saint Joseph Health. * Proactively lead efforts to design system initiatives that will minimize the likelihood of future errors. * Assist with the organization and development of the AHRS Culture of Safety Survey. * Data Management, Analysis & Reporting: * Analyze multiple data and information sources to identify safety initiatives. * Maintain reports for all data collected and manage databases to obtain information. * Review internal safety reports and utilize information from external reporting programs to mitigate risk & prompt safety (Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Medication Safety Alerts, Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI), Joint Commission Sentinel Events). * Investigate and facilitate change to improve patient safety based on identified risks surfaced through occurrence reporting data and reports. * Maintain a database of all incidents and produce tracking and trending reports as necessary. * Write reports, summaries and assemble presentations that conform to prescribed style. * Respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, families, staff and general public. * Committee and Performance Improvement Support: * Develop and communicate Quality, Risk, and Safety alerts outlining lessons learned to all key stakeholders. * Facilitate patient safety initiatives through chairing/participating in Patient Safety Committee. * Recommend and facilitate change to improve patient and employee safety based on identified safety and risk evidence based practices. * Serve as committee member for incident review and classification and assist with identifying each incident as a near miss, precursor event, or Serious Safety Event. * Facilitate or participate as an employee for Root Cause Analysis (RCAs); and assist with completion of all associated reports and documents. * Education, Training and Consultation: * Foster strong relationship building and the ability to make and use connections to complete projects and maintain strong partnerships with other departments. * Design educational presentations that facilitate the understanding and implementation of SafetyFirst principles. * Oversee, develop and participate in orientation and educational endeavors, specific to Patient Safety provided to medical, nursing, pharmacy, and ancillary staff. * Provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to Safety Coaches on the frontline who coach and mentor healthcare employees on the consistent use of the safety behaviors and techniques. * Lead Human Error Prevention Training and SafetyFirst Team Training to improve communication and teamwork skills for all members of the healthcare team. Minimum Qualifications Required Education for Staff Job Levels Bachelor's degree in healthcare related field preferred. (ie: healthcare administration, business administration, public health or related field) Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred. Master's degree in clinical or healthcare related field preferred or three years leadership experience in the discipline without a Bachelor's degree. Required Licensure and Certifications Professional risk, quality or safety certifications preferred (ie: CPHRM , CPHQ, CPPS) Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum 3 years working in risk management, quality assurance, safety and or compliance in a healthcare environment. Experience in courses related to quality assurance, patient safety, process improvement, systems analysis, risk management, clinical quality improvement, organizational change helpful. Experience with event/incident reporting and investigation preferred. Experience in data collection and analysis preferred.
