We are currently seeking an Environmental Geologist or Environmental Engineer to focus on environmental assessment and remediation projects as a part of our Industry and Utilities Business Line in Springfield, MA. In this position, you will have assistant Project Management responsibilities as you work alongside professional colleagues including engineers, scientist and planners.

Your responsibilities will include a mix of field and office assignments; soil and water sampling activities; conducting research and interviews; assisting in the preparation of proposals and site assessment reports; and remedial design, operation & maintenance, among other tasks. You will also be involved in permitting and planning for major infrastructure improvements. This is a great opportunity for an established professional looking to take the next step into Project Management.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geoscience, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field; Master's degree (MS) in a related field a plus

  • Typically requires 5-10 years of related experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Licensed Site Professional (LSP) or LSP-track is a plus

  • Familiarity with Massachusetts regulations including Wetlands Protection Act a plus

  • Experience with AutoCAD or ArcGIS a plus

  • OSHA 40 hour HAZWOPER a plus

  • Valid driver's license required

  • Ability to regularly lift and carry at least 30 pounds

VIEW JOBS 11/1/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-01-30T00:00 The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. MassDEP seeks applicants for the position Environmental Engineer II within the Bureau of Water Resources (BWR). The BWR includes the Drinking Water, Wastewater (Water Pollution Control), Wetlands and Municipal Services programs. This position will be based in MassDEP's Western Regional Office, in Springfield, MA, and will report to the Drinking Water Section Chief and perform duties primarily within the Drinking Water and Wastewater programs. Duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Drinking Water: * Conducting reviewing and evaluating new public water supply sources, water management act permit applications, filtration plant plans and specifications, engineering and hydrogeological reports, etc…. ; * Inspection of Public Water Systems (PWSs), including watersheds, drinking water treatment plants, water sources and distribution systems; * Evaluation of water quality sample results, review of existing and/or proposed drinking water treatment systems and practices, evaluation of interactions between various existing and proposed treatment systems and review of water quality sample results and determination of treatment needs to achieve optimal water quality; * Investigation of water supply contamination incidents, ensuring regulatory compliance, training systems and undertaking compliance and enforcement actions and providing technical assistance to Public Water Systems; * In connection with and in addition to the Drinking Water contamination response, the position will assist with the region's Mobile Operations Center, an Emergency Response related vehicle capable of providing laboratory support in the field; and * (f) such other duties necessary to administer all statutes and regulations related to drinking water, including the regulations at 310 CMR 22.00. 2. Wastewater: * Conducting reviews and evaluation of permit applications, wastewater treatment plant plans and specifications, engineering and hydrogeological reports, etc; * Inspection of wastewater treatment plants and collection systems; * Investigation of permit violations and other incidents; * Ensure regulatory compliance, training systems and undertake compliance and enforcement actions and provide technical assistance to Wastewater Treatment plants; * Inspection of wastewater treatment plant laboratories * (f) Title 5 (septic system) duties including technical assistance to board of health and representing the Department at Title 5 event; * Assist with bacteria source tracking efforts in the region; * Other duties as may be necessary to administer all statutes and regulations related to Wastewater and Water Pollution. 3. Wetlands: * assist the Wetland Program in the implementation of the Wetlands Protection Act and the Clean Water Act as may be necessary. Preferred Qualifications: * Knowledge of environmental engineering principles and practices of Environmental Science and Public Health particularly as related to the specialty assigned. * Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to environmental protection, particularly the Drinking Water and Wastewater regulations. * Ability to read, interpret and evaluate water supply studies and engineering calculations for wastewater facilities and systems. * Ability to read, interpret and evaluate hydrogeologic reports pertaining to wastewater permitting. * Ability to review and evaluate effluent water quality analysis for wastewater treatment facilities to determined compliance with permits, state regulations and policy. * Ability to review and evaluate draft environmental impact reports to determine the wastewater requirements and permitting for projects, including impacts to Wastewater Treatment Plants. * Ability to use various field instruments and equipment. * Ability to review engineering plans. * Ability to conduct site approval investigations. * Ability to conduct the evaluation of hydrogeological studies. * Ability to work with wastewater treatment facilities, local officials, consultants and other DEP staff in connection with the physical, operational and financial planning relative to those systems and facilities. * Ability to utilize computers to expedite work functions, to assist, train and supervise others in the use of the computers and to use develop computer tracking and other systems to increase work efficiency in areas requested by the supervisor. * Ability to perform compliance inspections of facilities under the auspices of the wastewater program through both on-site inspection and the review of written materials. * Ability to determine the proper format and procedure for assembling items of information. * Ability to compile statistical data; ability to prepare general reports. * Ability to write concisely, to express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in logical sequence * Licensed Water Operator – treatment or distribution (preferred) * Certified Cross Connection inspector (preferred) * P.E. License (preferred) * Title 5 system inspector (preferred) * Soil evaluator (preferred) First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental engineering, civil engineering, sanitary engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or public health engineering and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in environmental engineering, civil engineering, civil engineering technology, sanitary engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or public health engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* III.
