DEQ Starting Salary: Environmental Engineer I - $4,579 / month (DOE)

Environmental Engineer II - $5,468 / month (DOE)

Status: Regular Full Time

SUMMARY OF WORK:

While the position is based on site in Bismarck, travel within the state including some overnight stays is part of the job. On average there will be 3 - 4 daylong trips per month and approximately 1 - 2 overnight trips per month.

As an Environmental Engineer for the Solid Waste Program, you will be part of a team that protects and improves the environment by ensuring solid waste is stored and disposed of properly for the health and safety of our citizens. You will be responsible for enforcing rules and regulations related to the solid waste program by reviewing construction plans, specifications, and documentation reports; providing technical oversight and training to stakeholders; conducting onsite inspections; and responding to inquiries from the public, community leaders, regulatory agencies, and business leaders about waste management.

To succeed in this position, you must be able to interpret and explain engineering and scientific concepts, documents, policies, and regulations to stakeholders in a way that leads to compliance; enforce rules objectively, consistently, and fairly; and have work experience with databases and spreadsheets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.

DEQ is attempting to fill this position at the Environmental Engineer II level but reserves the right to underfill the position as an Environmental Scientist I.

To be considered for an Environmental Engineer II, you must have a bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program in an engineering field and one year of related experience. A master's degree may substitute for 1 year of work experience.

To be considered for an Environmental Engineer I, you must have a bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program in an engineering field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in solid waste management, landfill design, soil science, geology, or hydrology.
