The Environmental Engineer is responsible for driving environmental compliance at the Munising Mill site. This role provides technical and managerial direction, guidance and council to develop and achieve the Technical Products environmental goals and performance objectives; manages the necessary utilities of air, effluent, solid waste, hazardous waste and water for the Munising Mill; and provides leadership for the Corporate Environmental Management System (EMS).
Munising is located on the southern shore of Lake Superior and is surrounded by protective hillsides and picturesque Munising Bay. Munising is the gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Hiawatha National Forest, Grand Island Recreation Area, numerous waterfalls, and a host of other natural wonders, all in close proximity. ResponsibilitiesImplement self-auditing programs to ensure 100% compliance with all internal and external requirements.Maintain and continuously improve regulatory compliance assurance process through overall direction of the site's environmental programs.Evaluate, develop and effectively implement new environmental work processes or procedures.Facilitate root cause investigations for environmental related incidents as required; work with plant management to ensure timely and sustainable closure of all corrective actions.Provide expertise for and review environmental management of changes (MOCs) prior to submitting; perform environmental review for plant MOCs and appropriations in a timely manner.Establish environmental objectives and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable regulations at the facility.Work to establish pollution prevention and waste management activities to reduce the facility's environmental impact and liability.Successfully integrate environmental processes into plant operations to ensure compliance with legal and required reporting.Identify and drive improvement opportunities to achieve assigned goals (e.g. waste or emission reduction).Serve as an environmental resource for other Neenah Paper facilities.Provide expertise on landfill closures and monitoring/maintenance plans.Provide coaching and education to all employees to maintain environmental compliance.Complete and submit required regulatory and periodic emission reports on time.Prepare and submit routine reports to regulatory agencies as required by regulations and permits.Develop, track, and report for Risk Management, SARA TRI, and Tier II requirements.Complete and sign waste manifests and obtain a Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Certification.Obtain a Michigan Storm Water certification.Work with environmental specialists in the region to understand complex federal and state air, water, and waste regulations; communicate those to site personnel as needed.Anticipate regulatory impacts and partner with the broader team to develop and implement strategies for compliance with legal and other requirements.Participate in advocacy activities at the community, legislative, regulatory and trade association to minimize impacts on plant goals.Ability to perform chemical reviews/assessments as they relate to existing permit conditions and aquatic toxicity potentials.Initiate and lead cost savings projects.Participate in the development of capital projects that may impact the mill's environmental performance or goals.Take on other duties as assigned.Qualifications
BS degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering or related field.
Minimum of 5 years experience in environmental regulations, HSE management systems and compliance programs.
Minimum of 5 years experience in environmental management, with some of that experience in the pulp and paper industry.
Background in developing air and wastewater permits.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to interface with and influence all levels of plant personnel.
Self-motivation with strong initiative and bias for action; uncompromising drive for compliance and willingness to escalate issues.
Willing and able to move into other roles such as Process Engineering and Operations.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
