Under general supervision, provides technical support and guidance for Environmental projects and programs at assigned site.

  • Installs, operates, and maintains environmental and emission monitoring instruments and testing equipment. Analyzes data for compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Evaluates and assesses environmental risk and develops programs for risk reduction.

  • Collaborates in recommending appropriate action to management in compliance with regulations.

  • Reviews and/or Prepares and maintains detailed records and files of environmental data and communications.

  • Evaluates and administers contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.

  • Maintains basic working knowledge of national, regional and local environmental, occupational health, and other applicable regulations. Maintains knowledge of site environmental policies and procedures.

  • May provide leadership to less experienced engineers and technicians.

  • May serve as Project Manager or technical expert on small to medium-sized environmental projects (e.g., compliance, remediation, or reclamation).

  • Leads or participates in regular audits and inspections of operations areas for purposes of ensuring compliance with site environmental policies, procedures and requirements of the Environmental Management System.

  • Coordinates the timely recycling and disposition of materials and other company assets in compliance with applicable legal and other requirements.

  • Tracks and reports the recycling and disposition of materials and other company assets as directed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Environmental, Civil, Chemical, Agricultural, Mining, Metallurgical, Geological or similar) and at least three (3) years environmental or related experience, OR

  • Master's degree in Engineering in a related field and at least one (1) year environmental or related experience.

  • Additional certification or licensure appropriate to the job may be required or preferred: (US Examples include: HAZWOPER, Method 9, DOT, EMS Auditor, Asbestos, Water Treatment Operator, or CHMM.)

  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see

  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday

  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required

  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as per applicable State Laws

Under moderate supervision, provide mining operation Geotechnical Engineering support related to design, construction, and operation of ore leach pads, tailings impoundments, storm water ponds, mining infrastructure foundations, etc. Serve as resource for Geotechnical information and analysis. * Lead Geotechnical instrumentation monitoring and data collection * Lead the operation Geotechnical data inventory effort * Lead regular Geotechnical inspections of active and inactive structures * Lead construction Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) activities for construction of tailings embankments, ore leach stockpiles, and/or Engineer-of-Record (EOR)'s QA activities as appropriate * Lead or supervise drilling and Geotechnical instrumentation installation by contractors and EOR * Lead the contract management and coordination with the EOR for ore leach pads, tailings storage facilities, storm water ponds, etc. to ensure regular review, tracking of all actions items, and to ensure compliance with recommendations of the EOR * Communicate accurate, timely and relevant Geotechnical information to operational management team and staff * Liaise with the FCX Corporate Tailings and Crushed Leach Stewardship Team by tracking all recommendations, ensuring compliance with those recommendations, and regular reporting * Liaise with the FMMC Corporate Tailings and Water Group to develop scopes of work, as required * Proactively seek improvements to the safe and Geotechnically stable construction and operation of ore leach pads, tailings storage facilities, storm water ponds, etc. * Assist with the development, maintenance and implementations of strategic plans to enhance the operation's slope stability program * Assist with the preparation of annual sustaining capital, operational budget and capital funding * May represent the site on company sponsored steering teams related to Geotechnical efforts * Perform other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited curriculum, with courses in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and three (3) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise, OR * Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or applicable Engineering discipline and two (2) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise * Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely educated audience * Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety for yourself and others * Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards * Knowledge in the principles and practices of Civil, Geologic, Geotechnical, or Hydrologic Engineering or a related field of Science or Engineering * Knowledge of appropriate earth embankment construction monitoring and quality assurance * Engineering experience in slope stability and/or seismic analysis * Comfortable working with people / good interpersonal relationships
