Summary
Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for an Environmental Engineer I. EH&S is an employing unit which reports to the Office of University Counsel at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise and provides exemplary service.
Responsibilities of this position include support of various environmental programs impacting Iowa State University. Programs include federally mandated Clean Water Act (CWA), Clean Air Act (CAA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and various related programs including National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC), Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4), Campus Title V permit and Non-Domestic Waste Water (NDW2) programs. These responsibilities will include conducting environmental sampling, completing campus inspections, and inventorying materials and equipment as required by the university's multiple permits; assist sustainability efforts related to hazardous waste minimization and recycling.
This position will collect unwanted materials including chemical, radiological, biological and other special waste streams and transport to the ISU-Regulated Materials Facility (ISU-RMF); operate a pathological waste incinerator; provide training on environmental topics to university personnel; and assist in the overall operation of the RCRA, UST, AST and other regulatory programs. This position will also provide regulatory compliance assistance for all University labs and facilities; interact with local, state and federal regulatory agencies; and provide technical expertise during hazardous material emergencies. Duties of this position require the ability to lift 40 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation, have sufficient manual dexterity to handle chemical containers and work with tools; and wear a respirator.
This position is a 2 year term with possibility for extension.
Example of Duties
Oversees and conducts testing on safety equipment, storage of safety containers, disposal of hazardous wastes, and permit-required inspections.
Reports on all data gathered and maintain databases.
Applies knowledge of agriculture, chemistry, meteorology, and engineering principles to identify potential pollutants from entering air, water, and soil.
Coordinates safe treatment, processing, and disposal of hazardous wastes.
Oversees and performs inspections for water resources, air resources, soil resources, hazardous waste, and regulated materials.
Provides safety training and respond to emergencies.
Assists in identifying environmental threats.
