GSI is seeking an experienced Environmental Data Manager who can combine technical ability, creativity, and business acumen to augment our data management and data visualization teams. The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge and experience working with environmental chemistry data generated from field investigations of water, soil, sediment, air, and biological matrices. Relevant responsibilities include creating and maintaining relational databases, and providing query, reporting, and visualization support in a collaborative organization, working closely with technical staff. Candidate should know how to analyze system requirements and have familiarity with relational databases and data visualization techniques using relevant and current tools and applications. The ideal candidate would be located near an existing GSI office and would have a routine presence in the office under a flexible work arrangement.

We specialize in solving complex environmental problems by leveraging our extensive knowledge of environmental regulations, stressing accurate data collection and analysis, and applying new technologies to our clients' most difficult challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintaining data governance policies, standards, and documentation to ensure consistency, accuracy, and transparency in data management practices.

  • Design, create, and maintain relational databases for environmental investigations using environmental chemistry data from historical reports, laboratory test results, web sources, and third-party databases.

  • Support a wide variety of projects ranging from litigation support, site investigation, and data mining for research and development.

  • Interface with multi-disciplinary teams of engineers and scientists on data needs to support complex statistical and spatial analyses.

  • Provide reporting support by generating and formatting tables, charts, and graphs according to style guidelines for technical reports and presentations.

  • Manage and organize data to support visuals in a structure that facilitates automation.

  • Perform quality assurance of data management procedures and quality control of analytical databases to ensure data integrity and usability. Proactively identify and correct data gaps, errors, and data integrity issues.

  • Aid and support the review of datasets, develop data management plans, and identify alternatives for managing data more effectively. Provide guidance as GSI adds cloud-based applications to our technical toolkit.

  • Effectively communicate findings to internal and external clients.

  • Perform and manage multiple tasks within scope/budget/scheduling expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.

Qualifications

Critical Skills

  • BS/BA or higher degree in information science, computer science, and/or environmental science.

  • 5-10 years of previous work experience in environmental data management with strong relational database skills using Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, and / or Microsoft SQL Server. Experience managing laboratory chemical analyses of environmental samples is required.

  • Experience with both on-premise and cloud-based infrastructures a plus.

  • Experience with spatial data types and functions (e.g., PostGIS for PostgreSQL databases) a plus.

  • Experience using industry-specific products such as EQuIS a plus.

  • A highly detailed understanding of the complexities of data compilation, migration, and retention/backup, and requirements related to environmental, regulatory, and high-profile projects.

  • Familiarity and understanding of chemistry data, laboratory information management systems, data validation, extraction of data from online sources, and visualization needs and challenges.

  • Experience with relational database design and familiarity with best practices for data modeling and normalization.

  • Comfortable writing advanced queries in MS Access and native SQL (i.e., beyond create, read, update, delete).

  • Exceptional organization skills to manage a wide variety of data sources including lab EDDs and reports, third party databases, historical site reports, and client issued documents, data, databases, and reports.

  • High initiative, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to work with minimal supervision to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting project deadlines.

  • Proven problem-solving skills, project management skills with a focus on detail.

  • Experience with version control software such as Git or Mercurial.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in one or more big data programming languages such as Python, R, or Julia.

  • Demonstrated ability to distill data-driven insights through informative visualizations and analytical communications for large datasets.

  • Ability to develop and maintain web-based data visualization dashboards or applications for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Bash, PowerShell) for automating routine tasks, data processing, and system maintenance.

  • Experience in web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
