The Impact You'll Make in this Role
The Environmental Chemist position is within the Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) Analytical Group of 3M's Environmental Laboratory. The job includes performing GC/MS-based analysis of samples taken from 3M manufacturing locations, as well as supporting the evaluation of physical chemical properties of new products for product registration related purposes. This position includes performing analytical test methods, data analysis, and writing analytical test reports in accordance to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025 testing laboratory accreditation
As an Environmental Chemist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
Developing and performing analytical test methods using GC/MS and GC/Quadrupole Time of Flight (GC-qTOF) for the analysis of samples that originate from industrial hygiene activities, monitoring of manufacturing processes, site remediation activities, product registration studies, and ecotoxicological dose verification
Implement multiple methods of gas phase sample preparation and introduction (i.e. canisters, Tedlar bag, adsorption thermal desorption, OVS tubes, purge and trap)
Identify, evaluate, and prepare gas-phase sampling media (i.e. canisters, flow controllers, adsorption tubes)
Support new product introduction by authoring laboratory reports, and other documentation in accordance to EPA GLP's and the ISO17025 testing laboratory accreditation
Support manufacturing and product environment health and safety best practices
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:
Possess a Bachelor's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
Minimum two (2) years experience with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in a private, public, government or military environment
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related discipline
Experience with EPA TO-15 and TO-17
Operation and maintenance of Agilent GC/MS analytical equipment
Experience with Agilent Mass Hunter software
Operation of Entech 7000 series GC/MS interface equipment
Preparation of gas standards and the handling and analysis of pressurized gases
Experience performing GC/MS analysis in a U.S, EPA GLP compliant and/or ISO/IEC 17025 accredited environmental testing laboratory.
Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple tasks/projects and manage priorities accordingly.
Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
Experience with R, Python, MATLAB, Visual Basic and/or LabVIEW
Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent documentation skills, ability to work independently to complete projects, as well as work with cross-functional teams.
Effective communications with plant manufacturing personnel, industrial hygiene and safety personnel as well as state and federal regulatory personnel
Understanding of best safety practices
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
