Overview

The Waste Management and Prevention Division, Sites Management Section (SMS) is seeking an individual with strong organizational and communication skills who is interested in working in a fast-paced technical and science-driven program, focused on the protection of human health and the environment. The SMS regulates and provides technical oversight in the investigation and remediation of contaminant releases on all types of hazardous waste sites ranging from gas stations to Brownfields and Superfund sites. This is a limited service, mid-level position within the SMS, and will work primarily with petroleum contaminated sites, though responsibilities will include a mix of hazardous materials sites.

Environmental Analysts in the SMS provide state regulatory oversight in the assessment and cleanup of hazardous material releases to the environment, including soil, groundwater, surface water, indoor air, and sediments. Major job duties for the position include reviewing and commenting on technical documents, assisting stakeholders (responsible parties, environmental consultants, developers, attorneys, lenders, insurers, EPA, and other partners), managing all aspects of a mixed caseload including more complex hazardous sites, and assisting with special projects as assigned. An ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge of scientific principles, especially including geology, hydrogeology, and pollutant fate and transport.

  • Familiarity with state and federal laws, rules, and policies pertaining to brownfields, hazardous sites, and contaminant releases to the environment.

  • Working knowledge of assessment and remediation methods and best practices, including related remedial technologies.

  • Experience in the management of hazardous sites.

  • An ability to communicate technical information, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.

Additionally, a successful candidate will have strong organizational and time management skills, be self-motivated and able to meet deadlines, be an effective team collaborator, and be able to conduct occasional site visits across the state. If you are familiar with the complexities associated with hazardous waste site investigation and cleanup, this may be the job for you.

This is a limited service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs. While not guaranteed, most limited service funding is extended for multiple years and limited service employees enjoy most of the same benefits as classified employees including health insurance and paid leave.

As of July 14, 2024 the step 1 rate for pay grade 23 will be $26.57 per hour.
