POSITION PURPOSE

As an integral member of the Environmental Team, maintain primary responsibility for the oversight and management of hazardous and solid waste and recyclables. This includes scheduling waste removal with disposal facilities, weekly compliance inspections of storage areas, coordinating with Area Owners to manage their non-hazardous wastes is stored in properly labeled onsite waste bins, ensuring that satellite accumulation area drums are moved to hazardous waste building within specified time frames and are properly labeled, arrange for waste containers either in the warehouse or order bins from vendors upon request, assist with special projects to manage and dispose of generated wastes, complete both annual and monthly regulatory reports, submit responses to agency requests, accompany regulators during inspections, perform training of personnel in waste related matters, and maintain certifications required by regulations to manage wastes on site.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Work in compliance with all Pinto Valley Mine and MSHA safety guidelines and procedures

Work in compliance with all Pinto Valley Mine Standard Operating Procedures

Ensure that you and all employees and contractors are competent to execute the tasks / jobs assigned

  • Main point of contact for Area Personnel to request disposal of hazardous wastes and provide oversight of hazardous waste contractors. Responsible for establishing contracts or POs with contractors to provide hazardous waste services both for disposal and remediation.

  • Responsible for maintaining waste records in accordance with regulatory requirements, performing annual reporting and permit compliance.

  • Make recommendations for waste management and recycling improvements to operations that will reduce environmental impact and risk, and develop standard operating procedures and plans required to ensure compliance with permits and regulatory requirements.

  • Responsible for the oversight and management of the Spill Prevention, Control, Countermeasures Plan (SPCC). Includes conducting inspections of all SPCC regulated facilities to ensure compliance with the regulations, training personnel in the implementation of the SPCC plan, and ensure spills are reported and documented.

  • Provide oversight and/or assistance with projects generating hazardous materials and wastes.

  • Coordinate with contractors to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures as well as regulatory requirements while performing work on site. Assure proper training is obtained prior to beginning work.

  • Assists with oversight and management of water quality compliance (storm water, surface water, groundwater, potable water, drinking water) as-needed. May include completing regulatory reports, revising plans and procedures, and quality assurance and quality control for laboratories used for sampling analyses.

  • Assists with oversight and management of air quality compliance as-needed. Maintain Method 9 certification for visual opacity monitoring of stacks (recertify every 6 months as required by regulation). Includes completing regulatory reports, revising plans and procedures, and performing visual observations of air emission across the site.

  • Assign duties to Environmental Technicians as required to assist with compliance requirements such as environmental monitoring, record keeping, inspections, waste labeling, data entry and completing reports.

  • Reviews Environmental Checklist and New Product Approval forms. Approves or makes recommendations for alternative products as necessary.

  • Works with regulators during permit negotiations, site visits, exceedance reporting, and violation negotiations.

  • Reports deficiencies to the regulator per permit and regulatory requirements.

  • Provides training to facility staff regarding environmental topics, including waste management, air quality, material management (chemical) and water management.

  • Informs leadership team regarding potential violations, areas of potential risk and other environmental concerns that may impact the facility.

  • Completes required reporting. Manage and forecast annual environmental budget in conjunction with other members of the environmental team. Provide monthly reporting for accruals for contractor work. Report contractor hours each month.

  • Write procedures for environmental activities as required by permits and regulations as well as best management practices plans, spill response contingency plans, waste management and recycling plans, etc.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental or natural science/engineering-related field or demonstrated progress and intent on obtaining degree

  • Application of math, algebraic formulas, and statistical concepts.

  • Experience providing technical support to ensure compliance with established standards and governmental regulations for waste disposal, air, water and/or remediation a plus

  • Mining experience a plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The majority of the work performed by this position is conducted in the site operational areas. However, a significant portion of the work will be performed in the office.
