The Benton County Civil Service Commission is now accepting applications to establish an eligibility list to fill current and future positions in the Benton County Sheriff's Office. We currently have one position open.

Applicants must be a United States citizen; at least 21 years of age; posses a valid WA state driver's license; have a high school diploma or a certificate of equivalency, and no prior felony convictions. This position requires a neat appearance, ability to work with the public and other employees, good handwriting and physical dexterity to efficiently operate computers, copy machines and multi-line telephone systems.

Applicants that submit a completed PHS will be notified of testing dates, times and places at a later date. Resumes alone are not accepted.

Applicants must be able to pass a computer skill test with a minimum score of 70% to be registered on the certified eligibility list. The list will be used to fill current and future vacancies and will be valid for 12 months (may be extended to 24 months.)

Prior to employment, certified applicants must complete a thorough criminal history background check and polygraph.

Greets and assists the public, staff and other agencies by phone or in person by providing detailed information as authorized from sources such as published manuals and procedures; refers inquiries/visitors to appropriate department individuals when necessary.

Enters, updates, and/or deletes data on local, state and national computerized records as appropriate to provide and maintain accurate case files, records, and logs of police information, such as: stolen/recovered/impounded properties, missing or wanted persons, weapon purchases and permits, restraining orders, warrant logs, booking/arrest/release data, dispositions of court actions, and driving records.

Provides background checks and other requested information to officers and authorized agencies, accessing local, state and federal computerized record systems.

Completes regularly recurring reports; compiles data from varied sources and makes summary reports as required.

May involve routine mathematical calculations and tabulations in accordance with established methods.

Types and distributes forms, correspondence, case reports, warrants, memorandum, statistics and schedules from hand written drafts or notes or verbal instructions by using word office programs as Microsoft Office, Excel, scanner, calculator, photocopier and other standard office equipment. Composes and proofs materials to assure proper layout, grammatical composition and inclusion of all pertinent information.

Assists the public by issuing concealed weapon permits, processing or receiving various applications, record check requests, documents, and forms, and/or scheduling appointments.

Receives, receipts, and records fees received for permits, records checks, and other services provided by the office; performs routine postings of records and balances cash daily; may also bill attorneys for service fees.

Sends, originates, receives, and routes messages for the Sheriff's Office.

Files and updates data on warrants, case files, concealed weapons permits correction records, personnel files, correspondence, etc.

Provides liaison between department and other law enforcement agencies, the court, Prosecutor's office, and other agencies, coordinating department activities and schedules as authorized.

May assists with coordination of arrangements for prisoner transports into the County.

Performs other related duties as assigned.To be considered for a Entry-Level Records Clerk you must meet ALL of the following minimum eligibility requirements.

Application Minimum Requirements:

Pursuant to RCW 41.14.100 and Rule V, subsection 4 of the Rules and Regulations of the Benton County Civil Commission, all applicants must be a citizen of the United States who can read and write the English Language.

Applicants must be a minimum of 21 years of age and must possess a valid WA states drivers license. Must have a driving record that meets County standards.

Applicants must pass civil service oral and written examinations, thorough background checks that meet County criteria, and a polygraph test or tests. This process is done when an applicant is being considered for an open position.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency (GED).

Position requires a neat appearance, ability to work with the public and other employees, legible handwriting and physical dexterity to efficiently operate computers, copy machines and multi-line telephone system. Must be proficient in data entry, spelling, grammar, basic math and filing.

Applicants must be able to pass data entry, written and oral exams.

Applicants must be able to pass the AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS listed below.APPLICANTS WHO MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS MAY PROCEED TO AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS

Automatic Disqualifiers:

THE FOLLOWING ARE AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS- APPLICANT SHOULD NOT APPLY TO OUR AGENCY IF THEY INDICATE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

Driving

1 or more traffic crime convictions in the last 2 years (DWI, Suspended, Reckless, etc.)

Drug Use

Illegal use of illegal drugs in the last 3 years.

Illegal use of ANY controlled substance while employed in a criminal justice capacity.

Illegal opiate use.

Hallucinogen use within past 7 years.  No more than 1 uses total.

No illegal sale of ANY drug, including marijuana.

Pattern of illegal use of prescription medication.

Other drug use outside these standards will be considered on case-by-case basis.

Criminal Activity

Any adult felony convictions.

Any misdemeanor or felony conviction while employed in a criminal justice capacity.

Adult misdemeanor convictions will be carefully reviewed.

Juvenile felony convictions will be carefully reviewed.

Been convicted of any crime under a domestic violence statue.

Unlawful sexual misconduct.Employment

2 or more terminations, or leaving employer in lieu of termination

Withdrawn from consideration for any (law enforcement/fire/corrections/dispatch) employment, because of the following reason

Been dishonorably discharged from the United States armed forces.

Lied during any stage of hiring process.

Falsified his or her application, personal history statement, or any other forms during a hiring process.Financial

Current credit card accounts or resolved accounts in collections will be carefully reviewed.Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

Successful certification for terminal operation by WACIC/NCIC prior to or after employment.

NOTE: Prior to employment, a polygraph test and a thorough criminal history check will be completed on each successful applicant.

Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Knowledge of functions, procedures, and applicable regulations of the Sheriff's department and law enforcement.

Knowledge of basic math, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide accurately.

Knowledge of and ability to apply business and legal; English, composition, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and letter format.

Working knowledge of bookkeeping practices and procedures.

Good oral communication skills to explain policies and procedures and to deal with other employees, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and the general public using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.

Skill and operating standard office equipment such as scanner, calculator and photocopier.

skill in operating standard computer programs such as Microsoft Office.

Ability to read, understand, apply and explain County/department policies and procedures.

Ability to work independently,organizing work with minimal supervision.

Ability to establish and maintain complex manual and computerized filing and record keeping system.

Ability to maintain the security and confidentiality of police records and information.

Ability to work quickly, accurately and throughly with close attention to detail to meed deadlines.

Ability to type at level required for specific position.
