JOB GOAL:
To develop in each student the skill of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship; to develop appreciation of good literature of all types; to motivate students to read widely for information and recreation; to develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media; to discover and develop special talents of pupils in the field of English.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Teach content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalism to secondary students, using courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
2.Adapt English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignment that guide and challenge students.
3.Select and requisition books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of students; maintain required inventory records.
4.Adapt the curriculum to provide individual, small group or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student.
5.Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media and classical and contemporary literature.
6.Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas.
7.Evaluate each student's progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
8.Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
9.Identify student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
Administer or monitor group tests.
Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
Maintain professional competence through in service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
Working environment may be busy with frequent interruptions and a significant workload. Frequent standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, lifting up to 20 lbs. Use of standard office equipment such as copy machine, fax machine, telephone, etc.
Sterling is located in Logan County in the Northeastern corner of Colorado on Interstate 76 alongside the Platte River. Having the largest population, approximately 13,900, in Logan County and much of the surrounding area, Sterling offers shopping, restaurants, numerous parks, a recreation center, access to medical care and is located near North Sterling Reservoir. Sterling is approximately 1 1/2 hours from Denver International Airport and 2 hours from Denver and the front range (I-25 corridor).
RE-1 Valley School District has two high schools, one middle school, one junior high school, three elementary schools and two preschools and serves approximately 2,200 students in the Sterling and Iliff/Crook areas, employing about 500 staff. RE-1 Valley School District utilizes a 4-day school week schedule (Tuesday-Friday).
