Works to assist non-native English-speaking students in developing the complex language skills and content knowledge needed for civic engagement, career advancement, and career readiness.
Duties
Provides educational and English language instruction using teaching methods designed for a variety of learning styles and abilities and aligned to English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education.
Assists students by using English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) for Adult Education to develop an understanding of the function and form of the English language. Uses the ELPS anchor standards and instruct students in developing English language, academic, employability/ workforce preparation, and digital literacy skills.
Provides a wide range of teaching strategies to a diverse student community based on student assessment results (TABE CLAS-E), data analysis, reflection, observation, implementation, and evaluation.
Provides contextualized instruction to include technology and job employability skills.
Uses course text, outlines, syllabi, and other curriculum materials in accordance with program and state standards.
Participates in curriculum development and program improvement activities including textbook, equipment, and other and instructional material recommendations.
Remains current in your discipline, of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to assist and support student success.
Maintains accurate and timely records according to federal, state, and program guidelines, practices, policies, and laws.
Participates in departmental recruitment and retention initiatives and special events (e.g. graduation, recognition ceremonies, etc.)
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Background
High school diploma or GED is required. Bachelor's degree preferred. One year of teaching, tutoring, or training experience in a secondary, postsecondary, or corporate training environment preferred. Specific experience with online instruction and educational technology is preferred. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Job Knowledge
Knowledge of adult learning principles, the unique needs of English-language learniner(ELLs), and course delivery processes. Ability to plan, organize, implement, evaluate, and modify instructional processes. Ability to teach multiple subjects using a variety of methodologies, ranging from individualized instruction to small groups to whole group lessons. Experience and proficiency in using technology and the internet in the classroom for instructional purposes, including tools such as Google Classroom, EdReady, Khan Academy, or other relevant software or resources. Excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills, including ability to work cooperatively and effectively with a culturally and linguistically diverse range of students and staff. Demonstrated ability to display empathy and positive regard for others in written, verbal, and non-verbal communications. Ability to determine priorities, be self-directed and work with minimal supervision. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
Normal classroom environment. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
Western New Mexico University is a state funded University. As such, all positions are dependent on state appropriations and available funding sources.
Other Requirements Location Silver City Salary Range Salary per class (80 hours) will be determine by the educational qualifications of the instructor. HS $1,200.00, Associate $1,280.00, Bachelor $1,440.00, Master or higher $1,600.00. Advertising Summary
